Hayley Leishman Goals & Objectives

Goal 1: Design, implement and evaluate an 8-week mindfulness


program.
Objective 1: Find an evidence-based research article citing the
use of mindfulness in a prison and/or mental health setting, due
by the end of the third week.
Objective 2: Find a mindfulness assessment to use at the
beginning of the program and at the end to measure the
effectiveness of the mindfulness program, due by the end of the
third week.
Objective 3:
Using various online and print resources,
develop weekly mindfulness interventions that teach the skill of
mindfulness in a sequential or progressive manner. Complete
designing and writing one intervention by the end of the week
prior to the scheduled facilitation date.

Goal 2: As part of a prison wide initiative to reduce isolation among
inmates housed in maximum-security units: design, implement, and
evaluate a program for the mentally ill offenders housed in Olympus
maximum security. Present findings to the treatment team, directors,
and high-level decision makers within the department of corrections.
Objective 1: Meet with program director, captain, and other
staff to determine restrictions and safety issues that will effect
program implementation. Complete within the first four weeks.
Objective 2: Conduct research to determine what other
programs are doing across the country and identify evidencebased interventions appropriate for these inmates based on their
unique needs and restrictions. Completed prior to beginning
program (end of 5th week).
Objective 3: Using inmate records, collect data on crisis calls
made by the specific inmates selected for this program. Specific
data to collect will be: date of call, nature of crisis, and total
number of calls. Will consider data from 2-6 months prior to start
of program. To be completed by the end of the 8 week program.

Goal 3: Help prepare a job proposal for the Adult Probation and Parole
division, outlining the need for a recreation therapy program within the
mentally ill offender program at the local halfway houses.
Objective 1: Working with Christine (internship supervisor) help
draft and edit the proposal letter to be completed within a
timeframe established with Christine.
Objective 2: Conduct research and find an evidence-based
article to support the need for recreation therapist at the
Bonneville and/or Orange Street halfway house to be
completed by week 8 of the internship.

Objective 3: Help create a budget that will address the cost


associated with the addition of a recreation therapy program.
Complete by the 8th week of the internship.
