Logan Doane
University of Kentucky
12/1/15

When I first came to the University of Kentucky I was all about graduating with a
bachelors degree in computer engineering. Once I realized that it wasnt what I wanted to do I
honestly was scared to switch my major because I felt like a failure, as if I was already giving up.
After a few weeks of thinking I decided that I shouldnt punish myself for wanting to follow my
dreams so I decided to switch my major to business management to hopefully own and manage
my own business someday! With that being said I will now enlighten you on my plan on
becoming a world class business student.
One of the main reasons that Im here at UK is because of the amazing scholarship I
received. One afternoon I was in my bedroom and was looking though my mail and came across
some numbers that just didnt register correctly in my head. I was given the William c parker
scholarship and was awarded $42,000 to cover tuition over the course of four years. Without this
scholarship my only other option was to join the army reserves so I could go to college and get a
degree.
While receiving that money was such an honor, it also comes with a large burden. Along
with attending different types of groups and events, I also have to maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout
my time at UK to keep my scholarship. That is definitely a firm goal that I have to hold myself to
and hopefully Im off to a good start. I also would like to graduate in four years so I dont have
to take extra money out to cover tuition. As long as I stay around the 15 credit hour range then I
should graduate on time! Also another goal I want to set is to learn how to tell people know and

to obtain better study skills. If I tell my friends no sometimes then I will have my time for
studying and homework and even some well needed alone time!

I think that after graduation I will have enough connections and experience to start my
career in a company where I can further develop my skills to be able to run my own business. I
will receive a higher salary, better opportunities, and overall a better life with a business degree
compared to without one. To accomplish this goal I will have to stay determined and keep my
competitive drive that gets me through everything Ive accomplished. In order to graduate on
time I have created a road map for myself to follow.
A large part of college is what you learn outside of the classroom. For almost every
college student going away to college is the first real taste of freedom. With that freedom comes
a lot of responsibility, no longer is your parents there to make sure your fed and to make sure you
get up to go to class or even to pay your bills. This time away from your family and friends gives
you time to branch out and really discover who you are as an individual. This time is also when a
lot of us are introduced to adversity. Probably the main reason why people drop out of college is
due to adversity. No matter what it is everyone will face adversity sometime during their college
years whether that be financially or due to a disability or illness.
A big part of the college life is being able to manage your time. With only being an
hour or so away from my home town its not a surprise that a lot of friends from high school are
in Lexington, and with that comes them asking to hang out all of the time and can really get in
the way with my studying time. You have to be able to say no and get your school work done to
be successful in college. Many college students have to get at least a part time job and sometimes

even a full time job. Knowing how much you can handle is really important because working too
much and not putting time aside for your school work could really end up doing a lot of damage.
One thing I have always been proud of myself for is that Im never afraid to ask questions
or to seek help. I have really made an effort to use all of the campus resources including the math
skeller, writing center, and the study. Also I have not been one to procrastinate which was really
a surprise to my knowing my track record in high school. One aspect I could improve is being
able to study with others. I have never really been open to studying with others because I always
thought I would just get distracted, but I have come to realize that if you are with people that
share a common goal then nothing can stand in your way.
One thing I could really improve is learning some better note taking skills. I never really
took notes in high school and if I did I definitely never looked over them unless it was the day of
a test. I know that I learn best from doing something and maybe thats why Im pretty good with
math because all you do is problems.
To really get the best out of your time you first have to realize how you learn best. One
way to do this is through metacognition, which means the understanding of how you think. You
do this by observing your leaning process, giving yourself feedback on what you observed, and
making changes based on that feedback. There is of course room for improvement for me in this
aspect of learning but as of now I think I have a pretty good understanding of how I learn and
what is best for me.

Another thing that could use some improvement would be my studying skills. I really
dont have much experience studying because I never really had to unless it was five minutes
before a vocabulary test of something of that nature. The only times I have studied this year was
if it was right before a math exam or right before a math quiz. I would say it works well enough
for me but I know I could do better if I can stop being lazy. One way I could better my studying
is after every lecture I master everything that was taught before attending the next lecture, that
way Im not learning everything at once right before an exam. One thing provided from my
scholarship is for every math or science class I have its mandatory for me to go once a week for a
one hour study group. This is very helpful because its another time during the week where I get
to ask questions and get a better understanding of what we are doing in class. One thing I have
not attempted yet is using my professors outside of the lecture time. I feel like the day will come
to where I need a professors help but until then I will continue to use the resources on campus
before I ask for a professors time out of their day. A bad characteristic that I have is sometimes I
can be sort of lazy and with that means I try and do the least amount of work and effort I
possibly can. To me reading ahead and doing unnecessary problems for fun is a waste of time.
Im sure it would probably help me in the long run, but like I said Im lazy! I think what im
going to work on now is trying to stay off my phone and computer during lecture. Why even go
if Im not going to pay attention? I think that will help me out and help me remember things
better from lecture.
So far I have been very good with not procrastinating and I have been setting time aside
for my homework and have been getting everything done before the due date. Even though

sometimes I feel like there isnt enough time in the day I still manage to make it work. Balancing
a job, school, and relationships is a pretty challenging task but its just a part of the college
adversity that everyone will have to face at some point during their college career.
Growing up playing sports gave me a really good understanding of team work. When you
practice six days a week for two-three hours per day you really get the concepts of teamwork
drilled into your head. Without team work, nothing could ever get accomplished, whether that is
in an office building, a family, or on a football field. Ever since I was little I have always been
told by teachers and other figures of authority that I was a leader, I may not have always been
leading in the right direction but I am definitely a leader. Also being captain of the football team
really taught me some valuable lessons that not everyone will get to experience. Being around
the same people every day you get to really know your team mates on a deeper level. You start to
be able to read there expressions and tell how they are doing just by looking. Being a leader
means you put others before yourself and have every ones best interests in your mind instead of
your own. Being a leader in an office situation is very similar to being a captain of a sports team,
instead of trying to lead your team to a win you are aimed at a certain goal whether that be sales,
or a certain quota.
A good way students could get involved with something and benefit from it is by
attending co-curricular activities. Attending co-curricular activities would be very beneficial to
students because they are learning and working on things that go hand and hand with what they
are learning in class. Also even if you are not learning about what goes with the activities it can

show you whether or not you like a certain class or type of subject. I do not attend many
academic meetings unless they are mandatory or some type of extra reward is given. With my
busy schedule and everything constantly moving at the speed of light in my life it is hard to
spend time doing something you dont have to do compared to home work or studying. I could
improve in this area to get the most out of my college experience. If I attend at least maybe one
co-curricular activity a month I could learn more and have fun while doing it.
Living in America where everyone is free to live as they please, you have to be open to
everyone and everything. With a nickname such as the melting pot you can kind of picture all
of the differences we all may have from each other whether that be skin color, body shape,
religious beliefs, or the language you speak everyone is treated equal in our wonderful country
and no one should ever be singled out or treated differently because you disagree with their way
of life. I think that I was raised to not judge people and to treat others how you want to be
treated. I treat people with respect and I expect to be treated with respect as well. Also even if
someone looks just like you, but maybe they arent the best at reading something and being able
to comprehend it, that doesnt give you a reason to get angry or frustrated at that person you just
have to be able to help them in a different way that they can understand.
What is the most important thing that you need to take care of every day? YOUR BODY!
There are many different things you can do to take care of your body. The easiest and most
convenient way to take care of your body is to eat healthy. Although it is still a hassle sometimes
it is by far the easiest way to take care of your body. Nowadays most restaurants even fast food

have healthy meal options on their menu, which makes it a little easier to eat healthy, as long as
you can say no to the desert! A good way to make sure you are eating healthy is to meal prep.
Meal prepping is where you cook all of your meals for a certain period of time at once. This
makes it less of a hassle to eat healthy and instead of feeling like you dont want to cook and
grabbing the chips, your meals are already ready. Also another great way to take care of your
body is physical activity. Your physical activity would have to be custom to what you as an
individual, obviously your sixty-five year old grandma shouldnt be playing basketball, but a
good substitution could be walking, or using a stair stepper or even a bicycle. For younger more
mobile individuals like myself you can afford to push your body to the limit. Exercises for
myself include running on a treadmill, lifting free weights, and participating in sports such as
basketball and football. Exercise can do more for you than get you into shape, it can make you
less stressed, more energized, and overall a healthier individual.
One thing that people notice as soon as catching glimpse of you is how you carry
yourself. To be successful in the world today you need to walk with swagger, fill your chest with
pride, and dont stop until you reach your goals. My dad hasnt always been there for me and
wasnt always the greatest dad, but one thing he did teach me about was integrity. A very clear
memory that has stuck with me for years is him always telling me to carry myself with integrity.
Every time I saw him he didnt leave without saying that word at least once. He never told me
what that word meant and I never really cared, but now that Im older and realize that he was
only trying to help me and make sure that I get the respect I deserve and know how to handle
myself in the real world. Having integrity to me means that you understand peoples differences

and that everyone is not perfect, but you never take advantage of someone, you always stay
honest, and you hold yourself to morals. When you are in an environment such as a place of
business you have to carry yourself in a professional manner, this includes everything from the
way you dress to the tone in your voice. To be respected you have to earn peoples trust and be a
contributing member of that team. As long as I stick to my morals and treat people with respect I
will be golden!
One thing that is really nice and is included in your tuition is all of the campus resources.
There are so many resources that students dont utilize and its truly a waste. These resources
vary from tutoring services like the study that helps you with every subject, the mathskeller
which helps you with 100 level math courses and a select few higher level courses, mc3 lab
which aids students with presentations and speeches, and finally my personal favorite the jc
which is the gym on campus. People are always complaining about paying such high prices for
tuition, but they dont use what they are paying for. If they would realize they have every bit of
help to get them through college right at their fingertips. I actually use campus resources fairly
often. I attend math skeller or the study 2-3 times a week to get help with my math assignments.
Also I have used the writing center multiple times to help me come up with ideas, and also revise
papers. I used the Mc3 lab to get help with my website which they were really helpful and very
nice. Also I use the Johnson Center a lot which is a good way to lose some stress and gain some
confidence. Another great tool that we have here at UK is the job placement services. There are
tons of companies that the university has ties with and students get jobs on and off campus
through them all of the time. I went through with a job opportunity through them already during

my first semester but decided to take a different job instead. They are very helpful and actually
care about what you want.
