What had been a place of emotional safety became for them a place of fear Doctor Marilyn

Chipman discusses how for Islamic students school is that place. More specifically after 9/11
they have become out casted in society. The entire Muslim and Middle Eastern Americans were
blamed for the causalities and deaths that occurred. This is evident by how security has become
tighter such as at airports, the racial profiling they have received, and the way the mass media
has portrayed them to society. According to the New York University of Law more than 40,000
people have waited more than three years on their naturalization process when it should only
take 180 days. The majority of those individuals were Islams.
This type of mistreatment has transferred into the school area and the emotional damage they
face has caused them mental distress. Chipman discusses that teachers had to learn how to react
to these individuals so they wouldnt show prejudice only respect. She also mentions that each
teacher education program in America followed through with this by requiring that every student
take a multicultural course. The diversity that the classroom had work wise started spreading into
other activities of a college. There were lesson plans made to understand the Muslim experience
and fieldtrips to Muslim events. There was a new focus on teaching tolerance and even on
reducing anger states Chipman.
Chipmans research shows how schools tried to make a positive change but that is not the case
everywhere. According to Rebecca Clay with a focus group students expressed their fear of hate
crimes, anxiety about the future, and loss of community. On top of that a lot of these individuals
are immigrants from the Middle East (like Palestine) and already are experiencing trauma from
the dangerous areas they lived in. Slanders such as towel head are uttered even by young
children in school and even Muslim girls are teased for wearing their cultures Hijab (head scarf).
These kids are socially excluded for reasons they did not do making it uncomfortable to even
want to go to school. According to Education Weekly since 9/11 Muslims are never trusted in
schools, they have to work twice as hard to keep the reputation of their families at good standing.
Yes the individuals who committed the crimes on 9/11 were Muslim radicals, but society should
not continue to blame an entire religion for it.
