Phase 2 UDL Academy 20152016

December 11, 2015

Goals
Consider what your team has done to
learn about UDL.
Solidifying your area and
measurement.
Create a trial plan for Phase 2.

Phase 2: Welcome
Activity

Hopes and Fears

Answer:
If UDL were to fail miserably in your
school/classroom what will happen or not happen?
If UDL were to work fantastically in your
school/classroom what will happen or not happen?
As you finish, put your hopes in one pile and your
fears in another on your table.

Learning
Reflect on your learning:
What were 3-5 key things you learned/taught as a team?
What would you still like to know/teach more about?
What is your plan for learning/teaching about that from
now until May?
Use your Phase 2 Learning Sheet to track this
information.

Phase 2: Solidifying your area

and measurements

Confirm, Solidify, and Share your

Area of Focus
Write your well-defined, student focused area on
chart paper. Be sure to describe which classrooms
will be implementing.
Switch with another team
Comment on your partner teams paper with the
following:
Is this student focused? (i.e., there is nothing about what
the teacher will do yet).
Is it well defined (i.e., are all ambiguous words defined?)
Is this going to make a great impact on all students?
(Think about the continuum of learner)

Re-write your focus area (submit it to

your team folder)

Student Measurement Development

What measurement are you going to use every 2-3
weeks to show student growth as related to your
focus area?
Consider rubrics for engagement (sample)
Consider skill based rubrics (sample)
Consider measures you already have in place in your
school
Consider collecting school-wide data, perhaps less
frequently in addition to the data every 2-3 weeks (e.g.,
suspensions, expulsions, office referrals).
If youve already collected data, please post and reflect on
it in your team folder.

Three steps to confirming your

student measurement
Please complete whichever step you are
on. See the Three steps to confirming
your student measurement protocol.
If you have already done these three steps
as a team, please confirm the questions
on the protocol and post it to your team
folder. Be sure to post a copy of the data
you will collect in your team folder.

Teacher Measurement Development

TPP Districts: W. Springfield,
Pittsfield, and Winchendon will need
to collect observations and selfreflections every 2-3 weeks.
Observations and self-reflections should
be on the same lesson
Observations and self-reflections need
not be focused on the entire lesson

Teacher Measurement Development

All districts must be able to answer the
question: What did we do regarding UDL for
this trial?
Could choose observations and self-reflections.
Observations and self-reflections should be on the
same lesson
Observations and self-reflections need not be focused
on the entire lesson

Could track lessons being sure to summarize and

specify what was done so that this data can be
reviewed by the team in a clear way every 2-3
weeks.

Three steps to confirming your

teacher measurement
Please complete whichever step you
are on. See the Three steps to
confirming your teacher
measurement protocol.
If you have already done these three
steps as a team, please confirm the
questions on the protocol and post to
the team folder.

Confirming a Tracking
Method
About every 2-3 weeks you will gather to answer the
questions:
What did we do to infuse UDL into our lessons?
How did that impact our teaching? (i.e., The methods we
used in your lessons..; The materials I selected..; My
lesson plans..)
How did that impact our students? (i.e., what did our
student data show?)

To answer these questions we will ask that you review your

student and teacher data. You will want to have it in an
easily reviewable format.

Confirming a Tracking
Method

How did that impact our students?

See example here: Note that this example

would need to be modified to allow you to
see the data every 2-3 weeks.
Use the Data Tracking Protocol to help you.

Phase 2: Making an Trial Plan

UDL Trials

Example: Math minutes

Purpose for Business as Usual: Looking at student change, helping
teachers understand what their current practice is.

Example: Persistence through difficult tasks

Purpose for Business as Usual: Getting a baseline using the new data
tool, helping teachers understand what their current practice is.

What happens during each

trial?
Business as Usual: Baseline data is collected,
teach as usual for 5 days and track your
teaching data, collect student. Check for
growth/change or current state.
Other trials: Your team picks a guideline (or
checkpoint) to infuse into your lessons for 10
days with guidance. Track teacher data
throughout or at the end. Track student data
throughout or at the end.
Discuss results with your team.
Begin a new trial

Etc.

Trial 1 Suggestion
Provide options for recruiting interest
Optimize individual choice and autonomy
Optimize relevance, value and authenticity
Minimize threats and distractions

You may pick one checkpoint or stick to the

larger provide options for recruiting interest
guideline. Everyone should focus on the same
types of things, though the way they are
implemented may look different

Trial 2 Suggestion
Provide options for perception
Offer ways of customizing the display of
information
Offer alternatives for auditory information
Offer alternatives for visual information
You may pick one checkpoint or stick to the larger
provide options for perception guideline.
Everyone should focus on the same types of
things, though the way they are implemented
may look different

Trial 3 Suggestion
Provide options for physical action
Vary the methods for response and navigation
Optimize access to tools and assistive
technologies
You may pick one checkpoint or stick to the
larger provide options for physical action
guideline. Everyone should focus on the same
types of things, though the way they are
implemented may look different

Q&A
Q: What if my chosen guideline for a trial is not working?
Should I just go on to the next trial?
A: You might consider changing the way you implement that
guideline rather than moving on to the next trial. Try to
understand what worked and what didnt work. Then revise
practice using the same guideline again.
Q: What if our tool doesnt seem to capture the data?
A: Given that you will be using the tool at the end of the trial,
consult with your team before the next trial and discuss what
worked and what didnt and then look for suggestions about
next steps.

Q&A
Q: What if my partner cannot observe
my lesson and therefore, I will not have
teacher or student data for that lesson
A: You might consider asking another
colleague to stand in for your partner or
you might reschedule.
