Assignment 1
A.

In terms of race and ethnicity for the county of San Bernardino I

noticed that whites make up 77.3% of San Bernardino counties population.

Followed by 9.5% black, 7.3% Asian, 2% American Indian or Alaska Native,
and .5% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. From the data you can see
there is a huge drop of from whites to black and the rest of the races. Race,
ethnicity, and culture are often confusing to define or pick a part. Race can
be defined as a social construct that was brought up by people in order to
place yourself or others in a certain racial category. This has led to much of
the discrimination that is going on in the world today. Ethnicity is your
cultural background. Wherever your family came from would be your
ethnicity. Also, ethnicity is associated with your religious background as well.
Culture can be defined as traits, beliefs, and/or customs that make you who
you are as an individual. Your household in which you live is often a predictor
of you health outcomes. In San Bernardino county health is obviously an
issue because it is known to be an impoverished county. According to the
2013 data, 49.8% of San Bernardino County is male and 50.2% is female. Of
this data, 71.4% of San Bernardino Counties population is 18 years of age or
older. Health outcomes are related to your type of household because the
type of household you live in determines your eating patterns. Married
couples occupy 52.4% of the households in San Bernardino County. Though
this may seem like a positive statistic, in the county of San Bernardino a lot
of the times both parents have to work in order to maintain their lives

financially. A lot of the times this may lead to unhealthy eating habits
because there is no time for freshly prepared meals.
B.

The top 5 diseases reported in the county for year to date were

Chlamydial Infections, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), Hepatitis C, lapse of

consciousness, and gonococcal infections. Of these diseased the age groups
most affected were 20- 24 year olds as well as 45-54 year olds. The median
household income for California is $61,094. San Bernardinos median
household income is $54,090, more than $7,000 less than the states median
household income. The information for this data is derived from the U.S.
Census Bureau: State and County quick facts, Population estimates,
American Community Survey, Census of Population and Housing, State and
County Housing Unit Estimates, and County Business Patterns. As I scanned
the charts on the Disparities Dashboard I was drawn to the Health Insurance
disparities. I noticed that childrens health care is pretty constant no matter
what race the child is. The percentage of people who have health insurance
drops off when children reach the age of 18, and begins to spike back up for
senior citizens. Looking at the Community Dashboard there is a lot of
concern about adults with health insurance as well as cancer rates. These
health concerns were in the red zone. Breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and
prostate cancer were among the cancers that were in the red. Healthy People
2020 is an organization striving for the betterment of Public Health. Each
indicator that was on red has a Healthy People plan. The HP 2020 plan for
adults with health care is to increase the percent of people with health care

from 74.3% to 100%. HP 2020 plan for breast cancer is to lower the rate from
23.5% to 20.7%.
