Civil Engineering

Ever since I was little mathematics and planning was what I did best in at school.
From geometry to designing buildings on the computer, I loved it all. One day I had a
conversation with my dad and he said, civil engineers mathematically design large
projects like; bridges, highways, dams, buildings, tunnels, etc. and that might be a good
fit for you. So I took his word and he told me more about it. They work mostly indoors
in their office but also go out onto the project to supervise. With other bonuses like a end
of project check for sometimes over $100,000, your own work truck, your own office,
and your own gas card. I found this career interesting and something I would love to do
when I get older.
I researched further into this career and I found out from the occupational
outlook handbook that civil engineers make an average of $79,340 a year. You work all
year, Monday thru Friday and the only bad thing about it is you dont get overtime.
Another good factor is that it is projected employment of civil engineers is to grow 20%
from 2012 to 2020. Thats faster than average for all the job occupations. There were

272,900 jobs available in 2012 and an estimate of 53,700 employment change from 2012
to 2020. But before becoming an engineer you need to pass the state civil exam and 4
years of schooling.
The type of degree you want to get to become an civil engineer is a Bachelors of
Sciences in Civil Engineering. Its an estimate of four years of schooling but since Im
taking early college classes it will be two years for me. I need about 135-137 credits and
the courses I will be usually taking is construction engineering and physics classes
according to the courses plan of study guide at UNLV. Its going to cost an average
$26,000 to get my bachelors. Once your done with your schooling then you work on
getting licensed which is taking the state civil exam. In order to get my Nevada civil
engineering license I nee to take the NCEES exam in Las Vegas which is scheduled on
the board of engineers website. Its a range from $125 to $510 application fee. Finally
once your licensed you than get a job application and look to get hired at a company.
Las Vegas Paving is one of the many construction companies in Nevada. I like
this company a lot because they are number one in the state and my dad works for them,
and I can get a job easily as an assistant project manager. The entry level pay for this job
is $56,000 a year. And like my dad mention early, I would get my own office, gas card,
and truck to supervise the construction site. There are also training programs at the
universities in Nevada if you wanted to them before working. They are listed on the my
next move website. Training and volunteer hours are not needed but they are good on
your resume for Las Vegas Paving.

That is all the information I researched on civil engineering. I also set a plan to
get my Bachelors of Sciences in Civil Engineering. I hope to work for Paving one day
and retire with them. That is why I chose civil engineering as my career and my plan to
become it.
