In this video, South Korean animal rights activists are protesting against the dog and cat
meat issue. The video shows the activists inside cages acting as the animals, they also
carry signs with impactful images of the dogs and cats inside market cages. What
strengthens the cause of these activists is the date in which they protest, it is the third day
of the Boknal festival, and in this day it is customary for men to eat dog meat. This video
represents one of the many ways in which people can act upon this certain issue, which
comes very useful when answering my last research question What can we do to stop
the influence of dog and/or cat meat consumption?

future. This newspaper article helps answer my action research question What can we do

world gather through social networks to call for peoples attention to help stop this
festival, not only through social network but through making a presence at the festival or
any place that participates in this practice, can help advocate the abolishment of this
practice.

In this question and answer interview, Peter J. Li gives his part of the issue of dog meat in
China. Peter J. Li has background with animal protection and wildlife in the past, the
outtake of someone as important on this issue takes the interview to a whole new level. Li
gives his opinions on the Yulin festival and the health issues that eating dog food can
bring. This interview helps a lot towards my research in the way of supporting my side of
the argument and being against the consumption of the meat of these animals. It brings up
answers to my research question What can we do to stop the influence of dog and/or cat
meat consumption?, I imply this because it helps having the opinion of someone as
professional as Peter J. Li.

counter argument for my paper, it serves as an answer to two of my research questions
these being What makes people want to eat dog and/or cat meat?, and What are the
benefits of eating dog and/or cat meat? Oga Bassey tells in the interview part of the
article what he believes in and what he will stand for, this being his culture and his
beliefs.

This article expresses very important information as in to why the practice of eating dog
meat has arisen in South Korea. The text is mainly based on the views that the world has
had towards this practice, the facts behind each protesting event that has been attempted
to abolish the consumption of dog meat, the attempts that have been made by the very
own government of South Korea to ban this practice, as well as many other themes. This
article is majorly relevant to my research since it helps me answer two of my questions,
What makes people want to eat dog and/or cat meat? and What are the benefits of
eating dog and/or cat meat? Since the article gives strong background and brief history
on South Koreas culture, the reasons on as to why people eat this type of meat, are made
clear. The text also provides with a paragraph on the various ways that dogs are prepared
or served, as well as the benefits that come along eating this certain type of meat.
Podbersceck, A. (2009). Good to Pet and Eat: The Keeping and Consuming of Dogs and Cats in
South Korea. The Journal of Social Issues, 65(3), 615-632.
In this journal Podbersceck goes into deep research of the background of dog and cat
meat consumption. By conducting research and a well-structured survey, Podbersceck

Carlos Ramirez
tries to show the world the reasons behind the consumption of these animals in the
country of South Korea (mainly). South Korea felt opposition by the west and other
countries around the world for the practice, the article provides important data as to why
the consumption of dog and cat meat has become common in this part of the world. This
article helps answer my cause and effect research question since when do people
consume dog and/or cat meat? Podbersceck provides important background and history
on the beginnings of this practice, which I find very relevant to my research question.
Vaughan, C. (2003). The walk-a-thon for Koreas cats and dogs. Animals Today, 11(1), 15.
A 90 km walk was made for the intent of raising awareness and funds against the
consumption of dog and cat meat in South Korea. The author here is the one who made
the walk possible and performed it herself. The objective of the article is to induce sense
into peoples minds to open their eyes in to the mistreating of dogs and cats as the
preparation of the meat. Vaughan is asking for support and any kind of donations that
will help her campaign against the South Korean consumption and mistreat of the
animals. My action research question What can we do to stop the influence of dog
and/or cat meat consumption? is answered through this article because it introduces one
of many ideas to help stop this movement. It is on my side of the argument and it is being
presented in a positive form.

KARA is a registered non-profit organization which concentrates mainly on the dog meat
issue in Korea. The website provides a section with very important background and

history data which is divided into six sections. Sections which include important facts,
myths, what the Koreans do not want you to know or even notice, etc. The History
section of this website collects various important points coming from an organization that
is against the consumption of this type of meat. I find this article very useful in the aspect
of answering two of my research questions, Since when do people consume dog and/or
cat meat?, and What makes people want to eat dog and/or cat meat? Because the
article expresses the many so-told tales of why exactly it is that people in this country
continue this tradition. Not only does the website provide the reader with facts, but
opinions that have been so used throughout time, and that is why I see that my second
question is answered.
