MKTG 1960 Professionalism in Business

Mentor Interview
*note my goal is to be a business teacher with applied science in secondary education, Pat
Droubay is a teacher in Special Education. She is a retired Teacher for Granite School
District. Various same routes were taken to obtain her goals which are similar to mine a
teacher is a manager of sorts and is to help direct students.
You are to interview an individual employed in the career field you are majoring in or
might like to work in (if you have not declared a major). You will need 2030 minutes
to conduct the interview. It is preferred that the interview be conducted at their place of
business, so you can observe their work environment. If this is not possible, they can
describe their work environment.
At minimum, you will ask the following questions. You might ask more questions,
depending on the individual you are interviewing, their position, and what information
they are willing to provide.

3. How long have you worked for your current employer? In your current position?
Can you describe the path you took to reach your current position (education and
previous work experience)? Patricia Droubay, Special Education Resource teacher
working with mild to moderate disability. Woodrow Wilson Elementary. Granit
School District, (retired) Bachelors of Arts in modern dance in 1980/while
independent contractor worked with children with disabilities at Primary
Childrens at old Veterans Hospital in the Avenues. While teaching dance and
Theater and found a calling to teach children. Received Teaching Certification ion
1985 employed by School System. Masters in 1988 in special education.
Continued teaching and obtained more credentials. Educational School
Councilors Endorsement in 1999 The motivation came from a mother friend
where helping with disabled children
4. What are your major duties? 1. Had to diagnostic assessments on students using
criteria to find out if there was or was not a disability with areas that are
recognized by the state. 2. Working in conjunction with psychologist and social
workers. 3. Consulting with Special education Teams (parents, administrators and
teachers) to write an individual program each student. 3. Teaching math, writing,
reading, and social skills. 4. Mentor for special education teachers.
5. Can you describe your typical work day? Teaching each group where children are
academically. Have to get in at 8:30 A.M finding teachers to discuss about
students as needed, the bell would ring at 9 A.M. students would have breakfast
served in class. 9-9:45 math group. 9:45-10:30 Reading and written expression
group. Break 10:30-10:45 email teachers and contact and respond to calls. 10:4511:15 reading group. 11:15-11:45 written expression group. 11:45-12:10 written

expression group. Working lunch until 12:30 after lunch all paper work was
completed 1:1 tutoring who needed additional help. 1-1:30 math group 1:30-2
Reading group. 2:30-2:45 break, 2:45-3:30 1:1 going into the classroom. Schedule
could change on a day to day basis depending on needs. 3:40 dismissed and if bus
duty was scheduled Pat would stay later.
6. What aspects of your job do you enjoy the most? Why? Seeing students who
loved learning, the change in attitude when they could understand their work.
Seeing students happy to learn. Also learning from other teachers and being
inspired by them. The team work of the other teachers to improve the lives of
children to move forward through their lives. Work had a purpose with a reward
every day, not wasting a career. The money wasnt worth it, although the income
was respectable and job security. With a free will to interpret what is learned and
use this in your own way to teach.
7. What job duties do you enjoy the least? Why? The stress, to clarify beginning
starting teaching with 750 students at a high impact school, so many children
came from low income families, and when children and families are in low
income there are more difficulties. Children would come to school with a lot of
baggage that would impact learning. Learning how to teach bilingual students,
which is very complex, children speaking almost any type of language. At times
being in until 6pm to get everything done. Another stress was lock downs, when
the area was unsafe, people with guns, robberies, and other.
8. On average, how many hours do you work per week? 45 hours a week +
9. Is travel required for your position? If so, how often, where and for what
purposes? At times had to go to homes of students to consult with parents.
10. What percent of your time is spent working alone? With others? An hour and a
half on average doing personal work on programs for students. With others it
would be communication with instant message and email while on time which
came out to 20%
11. Describe the working relationships you much develop within your company
(Other employees, departments, etc. you work with)? There was grade level
meetings every other Friday, moving through grades and consulting with other
teachers making a 1:1 connection with teachers. Consulting with the other
teachers to organize events for the school parent teacher conference, science fair,
and other. Team meetings every week on Tuesdays.
12. Describe the working relationships you must develop outside of your company
(Customers, suppliers, vendors, partnerships, etc.)? Working with multicultural
centers, United Way, South Salt Lake Police, South Salt Lake Chamber of
Commerce, Granit Education Foundation, The University of Utah and other
colleges brining in student teachers, traveling medical clinics who would do eye
testing and dental works.
13. Describe your most successful project. Outstanding educator for South Salt Lake
Chamber of Commerce for 2015.
14. Describe a project that didnt go as planned and what you learn from it. Every day
something things wouldnt go as planned, and realizing that as a teacher needing
to stop look and listen to respond to it not in an egocentric way. Working as a

servant to teach, although as a manager of the classroom, letting go of ego


knowing what is best for everybody.
15. What personality traits/characteristics do you believe someone must have to be
successful in your position? Commitment, passion that you KNOW that have to
help student knowing that not everyone is born to be in the position.
