Essential Question: What measures have been taken to denture theft of pharmaceutical drugs,
and why are the drugs stolen?
Working Thesis: Many reasons have come about as to why prescription/over-the-counter drugs
are stolen and used.
Refined Thesis: Many people steal prescription/over-the-counter drugs for misuse for many
different reasons, which lead to preventative measures needed to be taken to stop these thefts
from reoccurring.
Bagdoyan, Seto J. "Additional Reporting May Help CMS Oversee Prescription-Drug Fraud
Controls." GAO Reports (2015): 1. Points of View Reference Center. Web. 19 Oct. 2015.
This article supports my thesis by taking about the potential ways theft in the medical
field can occur. More than 16,000 of the 5.4 million beneficiaries potentially engaged in doctor
shopping, by visiting five or more doctors to receive prescriptions for antipsychotics or
respiratory medications valued at about $33 million(Bagdoyan). Lock in programs are used
typically on controlled substances. Pharmacies have to permit automatic refills on only certain
prescriptions. Pharmacies worry about people stock-pilling medications on automatic refills, and

it is a continued discount on medications. About 700 beneficiaries received more than a 1-year
supply of the same drug in 2011 which cost Medicaid at least 1.6 million dollars. This article
supports my thesis by talking about how people were stealing prescriptions.

for Everyday Drugs. 8. n.p.: Mason Crest Publishers, 2008. Points of View Reference

Over the counter drugs are pharmaceutical drugs that do not require a doctors
prescription to be bought/ used. DXM is a commonly misused substance, a liquid cough syrup,
which is more or less available to the public. Many people have used DXM to get a strong high
from it. Many drugs now are place behind the counter, and consumers have a limit on how much
they can buy at one time within a thirty day span of time. Pain killers are also a big problem in
the health care industry. If one were to take Tylenol, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and/or Advil in a large
quantity it can create a euphoric and a hallucinogenic feeling. Antihistamines are another
category of abused drugs. They are used to treat or subdue allergies, help motion sickness, and
they are found in sleep aids. Many people also misuse drugs to lose weight. They abuse diet pills
and take them way more than they should. This source supports my thesis by stating the dangers
of the drugs being misused and why.

The term designer drug, coined in the 1980s, generally referred to various synthetic
opioids based mostly on the fentanyl molecule and MDMA commonly known as ecstasy
(Dunne). Designer drug also refers to any kind of drug that is taken because it is popular and
what everyone is into at the moment. Legal highs generally comprise cotinine stimulants and
synthetic cannabinoids. Ease of synthesis, low cost, and resourceful marketing have contributed
to the problem. The internet makes easier access to transporting and receiving drugs without a
prescription even though they could be over the counter. Ecstasy used to be a prescription drug,
until just like everything else, it got too abused. Medicines are categorized into three categories:
a) prescription only medicines b) pharmacy medicines and c) general sales list meaning
medicines bought without a prescription. This source supports my thesis by stating how easy it is
and why people misuse drugs.

"Preventing and Dealing With Pharmacy Robberies." 30 June 2015. Web. 19 Oct. 2015.
The pharmacies owners and managers can prevent robbery by the way they design the
store. Making sure there are a lot of cameras. The way managers and employees operate their
store. The personal policies they put into place. If a robbery occurs, act calmly and do exactly
what the robber says to do. Do not resist, and do what you need to as quickly as possible. Call
911 immediately after a robbery occurs. Look for signs of hats, sunglass, hoods, and suspicious
things about people as they come in. Make sure you make the windows and counter tops clear.
This source shows how to prevent a robbery and what to do in a robbery.

Perceptions And Abuse Of Prescription Drugs." Journal of Public Policy & Marketing
34.1 (2015): 103. Advanced Placement Source. Web. 29 Oct. 2015.
Prescription drugs are used for a feeling users get when taken in a large quantity. A 2012
study indicates that 24% of teens reported having abused or misused a prescription drug at least
once in their lives. Many people use prescription drugs to fit it, or to try and look cool because
they are getting high with their friends. Some studies show people are more prone to doing
prescription drugs if they do not have a good home life of come from a rough background. Some
studies show that people also just think it would be exciting to go out and get high off of
something new that is not illegal. This source supports my thesis by showing why people misuse
over-the-counter drugs.
Twombly, "Resonant Messages to Prevent Prescription Drug Misuse By Teens." Journal of
Alcohol & Drug Education 55.1 (2011): 38-52. Academic Search Complete. Web. 19 Oct.
2015.
The Office of National Drug Control Policy [ONDCP], 2007), that corresponded with a
dramatic increase in the number of teens seeking treatment for prescription drug misuse.
In fact, the number of teens in treatment for prescription drug misuse increased by more
than 300% over this period (Twombly). Public health practitioners now get together to
discuss ways to prevent over-the-counter drug abuse. Since teens see illicit drugs
differently than prescription drugs then the preventative measures to be taken would be
different, like different messages and different campaigns. A few eight and seventh
graders asked told officials that messages using scare tactics in them helps denture them

from abusing them, but informational ones do not. Misusing prescription drugs in
adolescence or anyone really, can cause brain damage or even bad/mean behaviors.
Earlier misuse can also lead to even worse misuse later in a childs life. Schools use
health class to talk about the dangers of prescription drugs and media campaigns have
been put up everywhere. This source supports my thesis by stating some way misuse is
prevented.
