Essential Source Launches First

Microencapsulated Probiotics for Children

Essential Source announced the launch of TriActive Biotics Junior,

a prebiotic and probiotic powder blend for children, featuring
Microencapsulated Probiotics, which are lipid coated probiotic
strains made under a proprietary and patented process. These
Microencapsulated Probiotics have been shown in clinical studies
to colonize and adhere up to five times better than typical or
uncoated strains.
In the adult probiotics
market, it has become
common knowledge that
many of the most useful
strains of probiotics (friendly bacteria) are sensitive to
the acidic environment of the stomach and gastric
barrier. Adult probiotics are now typically delivered by
way of delayed release (DR) capsules, designed to
bypass the stomach, for targeted delivery to the small
intestine where it can survive and flourish.

Children are often incapable of swallowing capsules, and theyre not alone. Recent surveys
indicate that as much as 40% of adults have difficulty, or do not like to swallow capsules and
tablets. Until now, manufacturers have combated this issue by developing other easy-toconsume forms including gummy bears, chewables, and powders; none of which allow the
probiotics to bypass the stomach for survivability.
Microencapsulation not only ensures the survival of probiotic strains through ingestion,
digestion, and gastric barrier, but also protects the sensitive organisms through production
stages and in packaging for optimum shelf life and shelf stability. A highly advanced
laboratory procedure (Flow Cytometric Assay) is utilized to accurately count live, injured, and
dead cells, so that only living and viable cells are included in the total cell count after
enumeration.
