Curriculum Map
This curriculum map and the mini lessons are created for 6th
grade students at Tres Rios Elementary School from the Littleton
District.
Sleep
6.M.NS.B.03 I can use estimation strategies to fluently
add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals.
There is a consistent rise in how much time students spend on
video games. It seems that there are more time video games, less time
for extra curricular activities, and even less time for homework. But
where does sleep fall in? I currently have students that complain about
being tired all the time and are at the point of almost falling asleep in
my classroom.
For this mini lesson, what I would do is ask the students to create
a number line starting from 1 and ending at 24. This number line would
represent the hours in the day. Students will be asked to estimate and
plot in different colors how much they spend their time doing certain
activities for an entire day. Sleep could be colored blue, school can be
green, extra curricular activities like sports or clubs can be red,
homework time can be orange, and free time can be yellow where they
are to be labeled on what they do exactly with their time. On the
number they will finally get to see where their time goes. Students will
read an article on how much time teenagers should be sleeping.
Compared to what the students read and where they are at, they can

make a new number line with adjustments to how many hours of sleep
they should be getting, if they are not having good grades, they can
make adjustments to how much time they can spend on homework or
reading.

Sun Safety
6.M.EE.B.08 I can write and graph an inequality on a
number line.
For this mini lesson I would ask the students to use a number line
again, but this would be a vertical number line where it would have
temperature. This temperature number line would be used to discuss
the average temperature of their hometowns in Arizona. Temperatures
during all the seasons will be recorded and average sunlight for each
time during those recorded temperatures. Students will compare the
temperatures and when there is more sunlight than other times.
Students will then think critically about what safety precautions come
with handling the temperatures and sunlight exposure during the
seasons. Students are to read an article on sun safety and then have a
class forum discussion on what current things the students do and
what precautions we as Arizona citizens can take to be safe in the sun
during those seasons.

Environmental Health
6.M.RP.A.03 I can solve real world problems involving
rate and ratio using diagrams.
For the environmental health safety lesson, I will ask the
students to create ratios on how much water they think they drink a
day, then a week, and then a month. Discussion will occur to get them
to think about waste and where their waste goes. They would be
presented with information that too much waste is bad and that if
there were any ways that we can improve that problem. A solution that
will be presented to them would be to recycle and all the options that
we can do especially when it comes to water consumption and water
bottle usage. After reading the article that will be given to them they
will offer solutions such as using a refillable plastic water bottle or
recycle the plastic water bottles that are being used.
