Media to Address Dropout Crisis
In the article, "ITVS Announces Production of American Graduate Latino
Programming to Address Latino High School Dropout Crisis.", the
Independent Television Service, leading funder of independent public
television production, turns attention towards the Latino high school dropout
rates and is launching the American Graduate Latino in an attempt to
identify and implement solutions for the crisis. ITVS gathered statistics on
the percentage of adults who do not have a high school diploma and 41% of
Latinos had not received a diploma, almost double than those of African
Americans and not far off four times that of Caucasians. ITVS appeals
towards community members through bilingual and informative programing
and broadcasts. The CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasts, Patricia
Harrison, approved of the initiative as she understands one million youths
drop out every year and that ITVS is capable of engaging people of influence
to help students stay in school. ITVS president and CEO, Sally Jo Fifer,
believes that society must work together to unravel a problem deeply
affecting the Latino community to help preserve democracy and Latino
culture. The initiative has a lauded award-winning director, Bernardo Ruiz,
directing documentaries to further the content and directly affect the
audience in the endeavor of spreading awareness of the issue in education.
