In the article Tuning In to Dropping Out Alex Tabarrok, a professor of economics, reports of
the disparities between Americas focus on higher education and how it compares to those of
other developed nations. Tabarrok pointed out how the United States struggles to accommodate
students who withdrawn from their studies and not everyone is reaching their desired
destinations as opposed to European countries who find more success in education. Tabarrok
highlighted the stagnant number of graduates who contribute positive spillover benefits for
society and the growing number of those who are unable to put their degrees into. Tabarrok
compiled statistics of students who completed secondary education and went on to successfully
pursue a higher education. He argued that America fared marginally worse to European nations
such as Germany and Switzerland; mostly due to apprenticeships and educational opportunities
provided within those nations. He acknowledged how countries offered students specialized
training were assimilated into a career and were better prepared when juxtaposed to Americans
who receive a much more liberal education. Alex Tabarrok believes the public education system
and the nation as a whole must invest in providing opportunities for all types of learners to
produce an equal learning environment in order to get the best out of students.
