Letter to Tabarrok
Dear Professor Tabarrok,
I am a first-time college freshman and through a class discussion I read your article, Tuning In
to Dropping Out and I believe your views summarize how society should perceive a higher
education. Throughout my adolescence I could not find myself going to college because I was
under the impression I was not good enough. But when I was offered the opportunity I believed a
technology major was necessary and I had to attend a college that touted the highest standards.
As I matured and became more independent I found out that I should choose a university that
best suited my needs and provided an environment that would promote my growth. I believe if
students took a similar approach there would be less indecisiveness and more self-worth.
I believe that students should look introspectively early on so they have an idea on what they
want because this becomes an issue that gets overlooked since most kids have not developed
their own opinions and make decisions based on trends or peers. Reading your article assured me
that my experiences and decisions laid down to set goals and ambitions to achieve. Reading your
article reminded me of people who could have avoided adversity if they found out themselves
sooner.

While I saw you addressed other countries statistics and educational opportunities I found it
hard to understand how it would translate to the Western world. I agree with providing
apprenticeships and specialized training but if it were the obvious solution why has it not been
integrated by now? Is it because people over look the long-term benefits and only consider the
initial costs? How can education officials persuade the government to become aware of the
trend? And if there is there anything I can do to help because I am more than willing to help
others?
I will continue my search and hope to find more solutions and perspectives in similar articles
since I am genuinely interested in creating an educated community. Thank you for your time in
reading my letter as I send my greatest appreciation and hope to find more of your work for
reference and personal use.
Sincerely,
Brian Uribe
