Engagement:
The teacher will call students to the carpet. This is where the engagement portion of the lesson
will take place. The teacher will make sure the students are fully engaged before she will begin
the lesson. Good morning class. I need everyone to push in their chairs and come to the carpet
please. One all the students are seated the teacher will begin the lesson. Today we are going to
talk about immigration and reasons why people immigrate to the Untied States. Does anyone
know what immigration is? The teacher will gage the response of students. No, well today we are
going to learn all about immigration. We have been talking a little bit about how great our
country is because of different opportunities and different type of people our country has. Well at
one point in time many people did not live here. They came from all across the world to live in the
United States because they wanted to have the chance to have a better life. We are going to watch
a video that shows the different type of people who came to the United States when it was just
being formed and some of the reasons why they came. Its actually a School House Rock video. I
know we have watched some videos from School House Rock before and you all enjoyed them so
we are going to watch one now so we can begin to think about the different people who travel to
the United States and some of the ways the may of traveled and reasons why they came. Are you
all ready to watch the video? Ok great! The teacher will then play the video for the students. (link
attached) Did you all enjoy that video? Great! What did you all notice about the video? The
teacher will call of students who are seated properly and are raising their hand. Yes, that this
video is about people coming to America a long time ago. What did you notice about the people
who were coming? Were they all the same? No, youre right they were all different. Did anyone
notice any specific countries that were mentioned in the video? Right, they did mention Russia
and England but there were many other countries that were in the video right? Yes, there were
good! Did anyone notice in the video how it showed people were able to come to America? How
did they travel? Correct! They did travel by boat! Many people traveled by boat to come to the
United States. So when people came to America they were coming to not just stay for a little but
they were coming to live here they even bought their families with them. Did anyone hear in the
video the term The Great American Melting Pot mentioned? Yes! You did, we heard this said a
lot of time didnt we? I want you to turn to your elbow buddy and tell them what you think the
great American melting pot means (McRel strategy cooperative learning) The teacher will then
transition to the teaching portion of the lesson.
Learning Design:

I. Teaching:

The teacher will then explain the objective again to the students. Ok class, I need every
ones full attention. All eyes on me please. Secured students attention and used
management strategy. So today I mentioned that we would be learning about immigration
and I mentioned we would learn some new words. We are also going to learn the
meaning of diversity, culture, immigration, and immigrant. Before we being I want to
hear what you and your partner predicted the term the Great American Melting Pot
meant. Would someone mind sharing what you and your partner said? The teacher will
allow students to share their predictions (McRel strategy-questions). Those were great
predictions! The Great American Melting Pot is something we say when we think about
all the different people, races, and cultures that are in America. I think that it is great that
we can have so many different types of people in the country. Not ever where is like that.
We are such a unique country we have a lot of diversity in our country and even in our
school! The teacher will then begin teaching the students the new words. Lets get started
learning our new words for today. We are going to use our Frayer model to organize our
words. The teacher will use a frayer model to help students build on the new vocabulary
words they will be learning during the lesson. The teacher will pass out the frayer model
and project it on the board. Ok class I am coming around now to give you all a frayer
models. Now, that you have your frayer models follow along with me while we discuss
our words. In the middle circle everyone will write immigrant. Now lets look at the
section titled definition. I am going to write in this section a person who comes to
another country to live there. This is the definition of immigrant. The teacher will then
begin to discuss in detail the definition for immigrant and provide examples to make it
relatable for students. So, if I go to visit my friend who lives in Europe for a week does
that mean that I am an immigrant? Right, no it doesnt because I am just visiting my
friend I am NOT going to live there forever. Does that make sense class? The teacher will
determine if she needs to provide a more detailed definition for students who do not
comprehend. Ok, what if my friend comes and visits me and she is from Australia and she
stays at my house during the entire summer? Is she an immigrant? Right, shes not. Even
though she came to visit me for a long time she only came to visit and at the end of the
summer she went back home. She never planned on living with me forever. Good job
class! What if my friend and her family live in China and they pack up all their things
and move to the America. They buy a house and their children start school here. Are they
immigrants? Yes, they are good job! Why are they immigrants? Asking the students to
explain their answer-critical thinking question to help with deeper level thinking. Yes,
because they actually moved here, they arent just visiting. They bought a house and the
kids are even in school. Good job! The teacher will then address a common
misconception with the class. What if I decide to move from Alabama to Tennessee? Am I
an immigrant? The teacher will give the students a few seconds to think about the
question. No I am not an immigrant if I move from Alabama to Tennessee because I just
moved to another state. You can only be considered an immigrant if you live permanently
in a different country. Does everyone understand now what an immigrant is? Great! Lets
look back at our frayer model. The next section says examples. We are going to skip this
section for now until we learn about why immigrants come to the Untied States. So the
next section says illustration. This is where we will draw a picture of an immigrant. I am
going to draw a picture of someone traveling on a boat because I know thats sometimes
how people travel to far places. I also saw in the video that some immigrants traveled on
a boat. Now that we have drawn our picture we will finish the last box titled nonexample. What could be a non-example of an immigrant? Right, someone who already
lives in the United States moving to a different state! Good job class. I know we have one
more section to fill out but we are first going to talk about why immigrants come to the
Untied States. The teacher will ask all the students to come to the carpet where she will
discuss the next topic. I need everyone to put their pencils down and leave the frayer
models on the table and come to the carpet. The teacher is using a poster to teach
students some reasons that people immigrate to the United States. Ok boys and girls we

have just learned the definition of an immigrant but now we are going to talk about why
immigrants come to the United States. I have created a poster to help us. The teacher will
post the poster on the whiteboard. Before we look at the poster I want you all to turn and
talk to your elbow buddy and share reasons you think people immigrate to the United
States. The teacher will give the students a few minutes to discuss why they believe
people immigrate to the United States. All eyes on me please. I want you all to keep those
predictions in your head so you can see if you were right about reasons why people
immigrate to the United States. The teacher will then post the poster on the whiteboard.
Reasons people immigrate to the United States is because they want to have a better life.
There are many countries around us that do not get the same opportunities as we do.
Some kids dont even get to go to school everyday like you all. Another reason why
people immigrate is because they want their children to have a good education and in
their country either they do not have many schools for children to go to or they just cant
go. Did you know that some countries didnt let girls go to school? Could you imagine if
we had no girls at school, that would be weird wouldnt it? Right! Right so then the
children can become citizens and the families also get the vote. That can be very
important for families. Lets read some other reasons people may immigrate. To find a
job is a reason why people move to the United States. In some countries it is hard for
people to have the money they need because there are not many jobs. So, to find a job
they often times move to the United States so they can take care of their families.
Sometimes people also immigrate is for safety reasons. There are often times wars in the
countries and the people are not safe living there so they move to the United States.
People who leave their country because of war are called war refugees. In fact, because
of several wars taking place in other countries now we have a lot of people moving to the
United States so they can be safe. Can you think of another reason that may make people
immigrate the to United States? The teacher will give the students a chance to think
before calling on students. Yes! Some people may move to the United States because they
have family who lives here. You are right. The teacher will then transition to the practice
portion of the lesson.
II. Opportunity for Practice:
Now class we are going to practice what we have been learning today. We are going to
use our list group label chart. The teacher will post a copy on the board for students to
see. I have already placed the categories on the chart for you and as you can see they are
similar to the ones we just worked on. We are going to look at this a little bit together.
Everyone has been given a poster on the poster there are several categories. Except,
there is one open space that is empty. This space is where I want you and your table to
create your own category that has to do with anything we have talked about today. This
can be some take ways you have gotten from this lesson, what you noticed from the video,
or even why you think it is so great that we have so many different types of people in our
country. It can be anything. You must all work together to complete this chart. Make sure
you all work together to think of some great ideas and use the knowledge that you have
gained from this lesson today. Take your time working. I will be walking around the room
to talk to you all and see how you and your group is doing. I cant wait to hear all the
groups responses! The teacher will pass out the posters that the students will be working
on. While the students are working she will monitor the classroom and check on students
progress. I see some great responses good job class! I am very impressed with your work.
We are all going to walk around and look at each others work to we can see some of the
things everyone came up with. The students will compare and contrast the ideas the
students came up with-gallery walk.
III. Assessment:

The students will complete a list-group-label chart of examples and non-examples of

reasons why people immigrate to the United States. Good job class you all have been
working very hard! We are going to do one more thing.
IV. Closure:
The teacher will review the word immigrant with students again before closing out the
lesson. She will also ask them to name some ways people may immigrate to the United
States and ways they may travel. Ok boys and girls put your pencils down. I am coming
around to collect your worksheets. Once the teacher has collected the assessments she
will review with the class. Alright, class lets review one last time. Who can tell me what
an immigrant is? Right! An immigrant is someone who comes and lives in another
country permenatly. Can someone tell me one reason why people may come to the
United States? Right, they may come to find a job. Whats another reason? Yes, to have
a better life is definitely one. Class, we are so lucky to have so many different cultures
and races in our school. It makes us an even better school because we have so much
diversity. All of in our classroom are different families but we are all able to get along
so great and be great friends. Isnt that amazing. Good job class! You all worked so
hard today I am extremely proud of all of you!
