STIRLING ENGINE

WHAT IS A STIRLING ENGINE

STIRLING ENGINE IS A HEAT ENGINE LIKE ALL OTHER ENGINES (KARIM, 2007)

INVENTED BY ROBERT STIRLING IN 1816

DIFFERENCE OF STIRLING ENGINE FROM THE NORMAL ENGINES ARE

1.

The gasses used never leaves the engine

2.

No combustion takes place inside the cylinders of the engine

3.

It uses stirling cycle (KARIM, 2007)

SHOBIN JOSEPH

TYPES OF STIRLING ENGINE

THERE ARE TWO MAIN TYPES OF STIRLING ENGINE (KARIM, 2007)

1. DISPLACER TYPE STIRLING ENGINE
2. TWO PISTON STIRLING ENGINE

SHOBIN JOSEPH

DISPLACER TYPE STIRLING ENGINE

WORKS UNDER THE PRINCIPLE OF STIRLING CYCLE.

(KARIM, 2007)

MAIN COMPONENT ARE A PISTON AND A DISPLACER.

THE DISPLACER MOVES THE HOT AND COLD AIR.

THE PISTON IS MOVED BY THE ACTION OF THE

DISPLACER.

SHOBIN JOSEPH

TWO PISTON STIRLING ENGINE

WORKS UNDER THE PRINCIPLE OF STIRLING CYCLE (KARIM,

2007)

MAIN COMPONENT IS THE TWO POWER PISTONS

ONE POWER PISTON IN THE HOT WORKSPACE

ANOTHER IN THE COLD WORKSPACE

DESCRIPTION OF MAIN PARTS OF STIRLING ENGINE

1. REGENRATOR-In a Stirling engine, the regenerator is an internal heat exchanger and temporary heat
store placed between the hot and cold spaces such that the working fluid passes through it first in one
direction then the other, taking heat from the fluid in one direction, and returning it in the other. (R,
1993)

2. DISPLACER-The displacer is a special-purposepiston, used in Beta and Gamma type Stirling engines,
to move the working gas back and forth between the hot and cold heat exchangers. Depending on the
type of engine design, the displacer may or may not be sealed to the cylinder (R, 1993)
BALJIT SINGH

HEAT EXCHANGER-Stirling engine heat exchangers is a balance between

high heat transfer with lowviscouspumping lossesand low dead space
(unsweep internal volume). Engines that operate at high powers and
pressures require that heat exchangers on the hot side be made of alloys
that retain considerable strength at temperature and that don't corrode
orcreep. (G, 1985)
HEAT SINK-The heat sink is typically the environment at ambient
temperature. In the case of medium to high power engines,
aradiatoris required to transfer the heat from the engine to the
ambient air. Marine engines can use the ambient water. (G, 1985)

STIRLING CYCLE

GEORGE B

KEY PRINCIPLE
A fixed amount gas is sealed inside the
Stirling engine.
The basic concept behind the working of
this engine is two properties of air.
1.

Expansion of air molecules when

heated up.

2.

Compression while cooling.

What about simple demonstration which

minds might be struggling with few
questions like
What are the advantages?
What are the applications of this engine?

Applications

CHRISOS TOM

Water pump stations

Combined heat and power plant

Solar power generation

Stirling cyrocoolers

Heat pump

Marine engines

Nuclear power

Aircraft engines

Applications
WATER PUMP STATION
A Stirling engine used for pumping water
can be configured so that the water cools
the compression space. This is most
effective when pumping cold water. (Gras,
n.d.)

CHRISOS TOM

Applications

STIRLING CRYOCOOLERS

Any Stirling engine will also work in reverse as a heat pump. When a motion is applied to the
shaft, a temperature difference appears between the reservoirs. (Gras, n.d.)

NUCLEAR POWER

CHRISOS TOM

Replacing the steam turbines of the nuclear power plant with Stirling engine might simplify
the plant, yield greater efficiency, and reduce the radioactivity by products. (Gras, n.d.)

Applications
MECHANICAL OUTPUT AND PROPULSION

Aircraft engines

Stirling engines are quieter, less polluting and gain efficiency with altitude so that it can be used in
aircraft as well.

Marine engines

Stirling engine is applied for underwater power systems in many places.

Pump engines

Stirling engine could be used to power pumps to move fluids like water , air and gasses. (Gras, n.d.)

FUTURE APPLICATIONS FOR STIRLING

ENGINE

IN THE MILITARY FIELD

Stirling engine can be used as an auxiliary source of electricity for submarines

and surface vessels. Also as an appropriate choice for fuel, it helps to reduce
the rate of pollution as well. (Gras, n.d.)

CHRISOS TOM

FOR MERCHANT SHIPS OR PLEASURE-SHIPS

Stirling Engine is a source of electricity and heating hence it can be used in ships. In addition its
vibratory level and faint noise make its use more comfortable. (Gras, n.d.)

CHRISOS TOM

IN THE DOMESTIC FIELD

In future, stirling engine can be used to make electricity ,heat for home and to produce domestic
hot water. Moreover if it replaces the use of traditional gases, it will definitely reduce the
destruction of the ozone layer by traditional gases. (Gras, n.d.)
