High School Speech Class

2013-2014 School Year
During my junior year in High School I took a speech class. We met every day for fifty
minutes a day for an entire semester. During this course we were taught how to communicate
effectively in many different ways. Attached is my grade I received from the speech class.
Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment and UW Platteville KSD alignment
1. Standard 6 Communication and KSD 3.A: The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal,
nonverbal and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and
supportive interaction in the classroom.
2. I chose to align this experience with standard 6 and KSD 3.A because I believe it fits well. I
think the experience and knowledge that I gained from taking this course will help me
communicate much better to students and faculty. Also, this experienced help me realize the
importance of nonverbal communication through actions.
3. After taking this class I feel that I will be able to communicate the material in the best way
possible to help the students succeed. Also, I feel that I will now understand the students better in
the classroom and be able to better help them with problems they have. I believe being able to
listen to the students and understand their point of view will help me do my job as a teacher
better. Lastly, learning better non verbal communication skills will help the students better
understand me and what I am asking them to do.
Reflection:
Throughout the semester speech course we had to do many different types of speeches
with different emphasis. Each one of these speeches helped us further communicate better. Three
that I believe benefited me the most were being able to communicate professionally,
communicating without long preparation, and being able to communicate non verbally. Each of
these are very important to be able to present information well.
As a prospective teacher I learned many things that I feel will be very important to me. I
believe being able to communicate professionally will help make sure the students respect you as
a teacher. If a teacher is respected, getting the students to do what you ask is much easier, thus
making communicating professionally very important. Also, I feel being able to communicate
successfully on the fly will be very important while teaching. In a classroom, things do not
always go as planned and therefore still communicating effectively will be important to
maintaining control. Lastly, I think nonverbal communication is very important in disciplining
during class. If a student is out of hand or being disruptive, a simple non verbal signal could be

the difference between losing or maintaining control on the situation. If this is not done properly
than the students may not get the education they deserve.
