More Than Money
I want to make it. I want to wake up everyday and be happy with what my day will
become. I want to feel successful and a job plays a big part in that feeling. I have decided the job
that will allow me to be what and where I want is in the field of business. I understand that there
are many business majors but I have not selected one quite yet. One of the main reasons I chose
the business field in general is that I feel a job in this field will give me the most opportunities to
be successful not only for myself but my family as well. One might think that a business career
consists solely of money but research shows that this is not the case. Business will always
revolve around money but many other aspects are crucial to the prosperity of a business as well.
A big component that often lies behind the scenes is writing. Writing plays a large role in the
everyday life of a business person and will be a key component in my success.
Being a good writer is important in the life I want because it can give me a positive image
to all of my audience. It seems crazy but if you are a poor writer one can put labels on you before
they even meet you. This applies to me because in order to get the job I want I need to apply for
it. According to Dr. Stephanie Heald-Fisher, The inability to write clearly and effectively
through the written word significantly impacts your ability to land a job. If I can not write
properly my potential employer could overlook me instantly. A couple examples of skills I will
need could include proper grammar and tone. Not many things portray an unintelligent image
more than poor grammar can. For an application my tone can help me sound professional and

give my employer the idea that I am serious about obtaining the position. Being capable of being
a good writer will be very important because it will give my employer a positive image of me
before I even step foot in the office.
One of the ways writing will have a big part in my business career is in ways of
communication. People communicate every day in every major including business. In an article
written about the importance of writing in business it is stated that, Writing skills are important
in many types of business communication, including emails, reports, presentations, and
brochures (Suttle). If I can not effectively express my thoughts into my writing, my co-workers
will not know what I want causing time and money to be wasted. As a businessman I will most
likely have to give presentations. If what I write down on my presentation does not coincide with
what I am saying the value of my presentation is likely to decrease. If I can not communicate to
my co-workers it will be very hard to be successful in my job thus making my life more
challenging.
Even though I am uncertain of what exactly I want to do I know I want to be in charge. I
do not have to be a CEO and make millions of dollars but I want to have some control. My father
is in a position similar to the one that I aspire to be in. He is a manager in a paper company
called Georgia Pacific. In his job one of his responsibilities is writing reports on the work of his
employees. This writing is very important because these are the jobs of other people that are
being dealt with (Konshak). My writing will have to be very accurate and descriptive because
positive writing could result in promotions and negative writing could result in the loss of jobs.
In order to be successful in the job and life I want I need to be a good writer. It is
important that I am a good writer so I can give myself a quality image and get the job I want. I
must be able to effectively transfer my thoughts into my written work in order to communicate

with those I work with. If I can write clearly my job will be able to run a lot more smoothly. I can
have the life I want if I know how to write in the job I want. If I do all of these things, I will be
successful.
