1.3

Other Waste

The above diagram describes the waste in Florida. However, to prevent future mudslides, Tree West has
done some extensive landscaping. This has resulted in 4,000 additional tons of yard waste. As Key West
grows the C&D Debris increases by 2,000 tons.

Materials Recovery Facility

Collection

To encourage recycling, Tree West will employ curbside recycling from single family homes, and multi-family
homes (such as apartment complexes) will have several recycling bins in easy to access locations.

2.2

Stream

The city of Tree West will employ Source Seperated Recycling. Though there is a higher chance of contamination, the recovery revenue will be higher. The city will clearly label bins and provide educational
information to residents.

The city of Key West already had Yard Waste collection in paper bags before the disaster. The city of Tree
West will continue to do this as well.

Landfill
Capacity

Assume 3:1 slope both above and below ground. Determine the maximum height and depth of the landfill
based upon the dimensions given below. Permitted height is 50 feet and permitted depth is 20 feet*.
*Tree West is 0-2.5 feet above the Water Table. Therefore, the landfill will be above ground. Additionally,
due to the small population size, the landfill is designed for a height of 15 feet instead of the maximum 50
feet so that the landfill can close in a reasonable length of time (and reduce leachate production).

Rolls of Geomembrane are 8x100. The city of Tree West will use 100mil Conductive HDPE Geomembrane.
The conductive membrane has the advantage of being easy to test for damage.

Leachate Collection

5.1

Design

Single Slope Design that drains to the top of the PhaseI & PhaseII side for optimal leachate collection.
The drainage material will consist of geonet, covered by a geotextile to keep solids out of the geonet
Landfill will have a sump to collect the leachate, and a riser pipe to extract the leachate from the base of
the landfill.
The Leachate is stored on site, and then treated in the waste water treatment plant as industrial waste.
It will be monitored carefully to ensure that it is added in small enough quantities to not overwhelm the
system.

Post-Closure Plan

The land will be used as a golf course. As a Florida tourist destination, there is almost always demand for
golf courses.
