El término kayak significa a decir de los

edad, en un acto casi ritual. Entre los pueblos
más hábiles en su realización y uso se encon-
traban los aleutianos de Alaska, los Inuits del
norte de Canadá, los Norses de Groenlandia e
Islandia, los Lapons en la Península Escandi-
nava y los Koryak y Chukchi de Siberia, quie-
nes increíblemente con recursos por demás
rústicos, lograron kayaks ágiles y livianos
pero al mismo tiempo resistentes para so-
portar los embates del mar y la naturaleza y
que ocupaban principalmente para la pesca
y el transporte de carga y pasajeros; aunque
las condiciones climáticas y las diferencias
geográficas y culturales se manifestaron en
embarcaciones únicas de cada pueblo.
En general, constaban de un armazón de
madera a base de partes atadas con tiras
de cuero y que posteriormente era cubierto
con piel de foca o caribú, cuyas costuras se
impermeabilizaban con tendones de los ani-
males cazados. Cuando el kayak volvía de la
mar, se impregnaba –después de secarlo-, de
aceite de foca para preservar su cubierta e
impermeabilidad.
El nacimiento del kayakismo moderno por
su parte, se ubica en 1865 cuando el abogado
escocés John Mc Gregor se desplazó por el Río
Támesis en una embarcación de madera de
cedro y encina construida según las costum-

rabajando en mi oficina de post-pro-
ducción, recibí la visita de mi gran ami-
go, Beto Friscione. Aventurero, exce-
lente camarógrafo y fotógrafo, maestro del
maravilloso mundo subacuático y heredero
de las grandes figuras del buceo, Friscione ha
acompañado a grandes personalidades, pre-
sidentes, empresarios y artistas a descubrir
el mágico paraíso marino.
El motivo de la visita, mostrarme el libro
que con otros colaboradores y el Gobierno de
Veracruz, realizó sobre los arrecifes e islas del
estado que se extiende de noroeste a sureste
sobre la costa del Golfo de México.
Ya en el prólogo, nos captura con la precisa
traducción en palabras de su gran pasión y
emoción al sumergirse en las aguas del li-
toral veracruzano –su tierra natal-, lugares
en donde la naturaleza se desborda a sus
anchas en una mezcla de realidad y fantasía
donde cualquier cosa puede suceder al verse
rodeado de la majestuosidad de los jardines
de coral y la fascinante diversidad de los ha-
bitantes del mar.
“El solo hecho de observar este espectácu-
lo, nos toca el corazón y nos alegra la vida”
dice Beto, con su habitual entusiasmo y júbi-
lo, cuyo motivo hoy me queda claro.
Por la amistad que nos une, le he pedido
me permita mostrar y compartir con uste-
des amables lectores, una pequeña muestra

hile working in my post-production
office, I received the visit of a good
friend of mine, Beto Friscione. Ad-
venturer, excellent cameramen and photog-
rapher, master of the wonderful underwa-
ter world and heir to great diving figures,
Friscione has accompanied great personali-
ties, presidents, entrepreneurs and artists to
discover the magical marine paradise.
The reason for his visit was to show me the
book he made about the reefs and islands
of the state that stretches from northeast to
southeast on the coast of the Gulf of México,
in collaboration with other people and the
Government of Veracruz.
From the prologue, he captures us with the
precise translation into words of his great
passion and emotion upon submerging in the
waters of Veracruz’s coastline –his homeland-,
places where nature is totally overwhelming
in a mixture of reality and fantasy in which
anything can happen as you see yourself sur-
rounded by the majesty of the coral gardens
and the fascinating diversity of the inhabit-
ants of the sea.

se observan chabelas, ángeles, esmedregales,
cobias, cojinudas, pargos, cuberas, jiníguaros
y muchos peces cofre. ¡Es asombrosa la gran
cantidad de vida que existe en el lugar!

En el lugar hay una piedra de 4.5 metros de

altura en la que se refugian peces coronados,
pargos, ángeles franceses, chernas, negrillos,
sardinas, bonitos peces rubias, cangrejos
flecha y camarones. En cuanto a fauna sub-
marina se observan hidrocoral, coral pétreo
y oculinas.

Fantástico lugar a 40 pies de profundidad,

con paisajes que reúnen corales blancos de

nias, abanicos, corales cerebro y castillos,
entre los que viven peces juveniles como los
mariposas, damiselas, payasos y loritos, con
árboles de navidad y plumeros de diferentes
tipos en su pequeño cantil. Es un lugar muy
bonito para buceos tranquilos, para buzos
principiantes y para practicar esnorquel.
This is a fantastic place at 40 ft of depth,

with wonderful views where there are white
telesto called cat tail coral, huge sea fans,
common sea fans, boulder brain coral, and
castles, all of them giving home to juvenile
fish like butterflies, damselfish, porkfish, and
parrotfish with christmas tree worms and sea
plumes of different types in their small cliff.

Pólipo de coral This area called Reef System of Veracruz is

opposite of Antón Lizardo, which belongs to
Alvarado municipality, while the others are
located in front of the historical Puerto de
Veracruz and the modern Boca del Río. It’s
worth mentioning that it is connected to the
Reef System of Northen Veracruz opposite, the
appealing lagoon of Tamiahua.

función, en un mundo y un país que obvia-
mente tienen mayores preocupaciones y ur-
gencias?
G. Barbachano: La importancia del arte y
su función no cambian ni dependen del en-
torno. El espectador cambia, pero el arte es

what I feel, express what I think, never fool
myself or paint to receive recognition or to
please others, it is a matter of self conviction.
G.R.: From your point of view as a creator,
what’s the importance of art and its function
in a world and a country that obviously have
greater concerns and urgencies?

many give it a financial connotation, it is ac-

¿Y si les copiamos?
El 25 de junio pasado con Conferencia de Prensa en la ciudad de
Londres, dio inicio el proyecto 10 X 10, revelándose las políticas del
Parlamento del Medio Ambiente y los objetivos de la campaña.
Más de un centenar de científicos especializados en el cambio cli-
mático y ecología se reunieron para apoyar el lanzamiento. El fin: la
reducción de 10% en las emisiones de bióxido de carbono en Londres
para fines del 2010 y de un increíble 60% para el año 2025.
Los problemas de salud sobre todo en niños y la calidad del aire
en la ciudad europea, fueron los motivos que dieron origen al plan.
La manera en que se pretende lograrlo es creando la legislación ne-
cesaria para gravar con impuestos el consumo excesivo de energía,
políticas públicas que favorezcan el uso de tecnología verde y la ge-
neración de recursos aplicables a la investigación de tecnologías
sustentables provenientes de los empleos “verdes” que los cambios
en los hábitos de los ciudadanos, vayan generando.
El planeta merece el esfuerzo; los legisladores de otras ciudades
con el mismo problema podrían consultar el sitio web www.environ-

Last June 25th, with a press conference in the city of London, began

More than a hundred scientists specialized in climate change and
ecology gathered to support the launching. The purpose: the reduc-
