HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL
The game of volleyball, originally called
mintonette, was invented in 1895 by
William G. Morgan after the invention of
basketball only four years before. Morgan,
a graduate of the Springfield College of the
YMCA, designed the game to be a
combination of basketball, baseball, tennis,
and handball.

Basic Rule violations

follow-through b) When blocking a ball which is in the opponents court but is
being returned ( the blocker must not contact the ball until after the opponent
who is attempting to return the ball makes contact). Except to block the third
play
Reaches under the net ( if it interferes with the ball or opposing player )
Failure to serve in the correct order

Spiking a volleyball
POSITION YOURSELF
Position yourself on the attack line. That's the line that runs about 5 feet
away from the net. Positioning is crucial when setting up for a spike... so
be sure to be in the right place, which you will know by watching the
setter.
START YOUR APPROACH AND JUMP
After the ball is set, start your approach. Before you jump, drop your
arms down to waist level and bend your knees. Use both of your arms to
generate force for your jump, extending both arms above your head.
HIT THE BALL
Raise your elbow above your ear and keep your palm close to your head.
When your hitting hand pulls back, keep the elbow high and extend the
hitting arm up. You want to make contact with the ball at the peak of your
jump. Hit the top of the ball with the heel of your hand.

SPIKING CONTINUED
SNAP YOUR WRIST
Snap your wrist downward to spike the ball into your opponents
court. Finish with your fingers over the top of the ball. Be careful
not to "carry" the ball for even a second.
FOLLOW THROUGH
Finish your spike by bringing your arm down across your body.
LANDING
When landing be sure to bend your knees to absorb the impact.
Your feet should be shoulder-width apart in a balanced position
