I consistently checked students' homework, and had the opportunity to create a math test
to evaluate their knowledge. I also informally assessed by asking daily questions pertaining to
the topics covered in class. Based on these evaluations, I was able to detect the students
strengths and weaknesses and provide appropriate remediation.
During this field experience, I created rubrics to evaluate works of students for a poetry
unit (students learned about the different types of poetry, and created their own poems in
scrapbook presentations at the end of the unit). I graded students written work, circled the errors,
and when I handed their work back, students would correct their errors. This allowed students to
reflect and make necessary adjustments to any misconceptions.
I developed an outline to share with students and also informed parents of the students'
expectations for the poetry unit. In addition, I included self-reflections, and feedbacks from my
cooperating teacher and supervisor into my lesson plans. I implemented some of the suggestions
into my training and have progressed steadily.
I discussed current progress and strategies with other members of the teaching team (i.e.
suggestions on the rubric elements for the unit evaluated). From my communications with other
teachers, I gained valuable teaching approaches in terms of evaluating students learning.
