Collective Bargaining and Unions

2. What is a collective bargaining agreement? What people/groups of people are involved in
the collective bargaining process?
A process between employers and a group of employees negotiating to who are
reaching the agreement of the working conditions. The collective bargaining
processes are the board of education and the association that is involved.
What is the teachers contracted hours and days (hours/days teachers have to be in the
school building)?
7 hours for elementary school teachers
7 hours for Pre-K through grade 5 teachers
7 hours and 20 minutes for junior high teachers
The days before the holiday; the teachers are required to leave at the end of the
attendance day.
3. How much planning a preparation time do teachers in this district get each week? Is any
of the time designated for certain activities (i.e. common grade level plan time, data
discussions, etc.)
Teacher will be provided with 30% of their total planning periods for collaborative
planning time. The teachers have an option of self-directed collaboration that will not
exceed 40% of the total plan time.
4. What is the current evaluation process for teachers?
The teachers are evaluated by the joint evaluation committee on an individual basis.
Teachers must be rated excellent or proficient according to committees standards.
5. Are there any specific requirements in regards to lesson plans or gradebooks/grading?
There is no specific requirements in regards to lesson plans or gradebooks/grading.
6. What does the document say about class size? Is there a limit? What happens if that limit
is exceeded?
The class size for the primary level for k-2 is not to exceed to 22 pupils. Grades 3-5 for
the classroom size is not exceed 25 which is intermediate level. Junior high level grades
6-8 classroom size is not to exceed 28 pupils. The limit is not to exceed classes of thirtytwo. When the limit is exceeded the teacher will talk to the principle, the principle will
review with the superintendent, and will respond to the teacher in writing.
7. What type of mentoring program do new teachers go through?
There is no mentoring program for new teachers in the Addison district 4.
8. Are teachers allotted sick and personal days? If so, how many?
Yes the teachers are allotted sick and personal days. A full-time or part-time teacher who
is new or enrolled previously is given opportunity to donate one day of his/her sick leave
to the Bank no later than October 1. A part-time teacher is given one full sick day and so
is a full-time teacher requests one additional day.
9. What is a grievance and how is the process carried out?
It is a complaint that you were believed to be something carried out in a wrong way. The
teacher presents the grievance in writing to the supervisor within 30 days. Then the
supervisor arranges a meeting within 5 days of receiving the grievance and would give
the response to the teacher or the representative after 5 days the meeting has passed.

10. How are teachers compensated in this district? Please provide the salary of a first year
teacher that holds a Bachelors degree for the 2015-2016 school year? What is the salary
of a teacher with a Masters degree and 15 years experience for the 2015-2016 school
years? Based on the number of days per year required and hours per day required
calculate the hourly rate for both scenarios. Take the number of days multiplied by hours
worked (i.e. 180 days X 7 hours a day = 1,260 hours). Divide the salary by the total hours
(i.e. $48,000 / 1,260 = $38.10/hour).

The Board pays the teachers by giving them an annual base salary of $41,605.
The teacher that holds the bachelors degree would make the base salary of
$41,605 for the 2015-2016 school year at $33.02/hr. The teacher with the
Masters degree and 15 years of experience would make $43,830 for the 20152016 school years at $34.79/hr.
11. How are extra duties (coaching, clubs, lunch duty etc.) compensated?
(6-8) inclusive duty free lunch period is required by law
12. What other fringe benefits are offered (i.e. health insurance, life insurance, long and short
term disability, tuition reimbursement, retirement, etc.)?
Health insurance- part time members who are working an equivalent of half time
or more are eligible for health insurance benefits.
Life insurance- teachers receive group life insurance coverage of $30,000.
Premium insurance will be paid by the board of education.
Long and short term disability- the teacher receives long term disability insurance
coverage with premiums paid by the Board of Education.
Tuition reimbursement- the teacher has to complete an appropriate form. After the
form is completed it will be given to the principle no later than seven (7) working
days prior to the start of class. Once the form is given to the principle, the
principle has to approve of it and it will be sent back to the teacher.
Retirement- the teachers must file a written notice of retirement and whoever
qualifies will receive up to 20 years for the Illinois Teachers Retirement System.
The teachers who are eligible for the plan will receive 4% increase over the
previous years salary. If plan exceeds, it will result in stipends or extra duty.
13. What is Teacher Retirement System (TRS)? Who is eligible? Are their minimum
requirements to collect on TRS?
A teacher retirement system is a teacher who qualifies to elect to participate in the
TRS of early retirement option that is provided from the state that continues to
mandate the program. The teachers are eligible for the plan. The minimum
requirement is up to 10% if the board may limit to it.
