What is
Copyright?
Copyright is when you are taking
a idea, work or writing, and
claiming them as your own
without the permission and
approval from the author.

What makes it a
copyright?

A work that can be made or

copyrighted if its original to the
person making it. It can not be
taken from someone elses work.
Examples of this would include
books, movies, music, art work,
poems, etc.

Copyright and Fair

Use
There is a fine line for when it is appropriate
to use fair use or to use copyrighted work.
So here are some steps you should take in
order to make sure you can use a video,
picture, music, etc.

Ask yourself
Am I making a profit off this work?
Am I using this for educational purposes?
Am I using all of it, or just parts of it?
Is it temporary or will it be officially
published?
Am I crediting the maker?

Why does this

matter?
Under the US Constitutional
laws copyright is illegal.
Congress shall have Power
to promote the progress of
Science and useful Arts, by
securing for limited Times to
Authors and Inventors the
exclusive Right to their
respective Writing and
Discoveries.

Acknowledging a
sourcing
Acknowledging a source does not substitute
for gaining permission to use the material.
This can still be considered copyright and is
illegal.
It is easy to break copyright laws without
intentionally doing so. It is even easy to
break copyright laws with out knowing it.

What is Fair Use?

Fair Use is using copyrighted materials for

educational purposes.

Printed Materials
Fair Use:
It is okay to use 1000
words or 10% of the
writing.
You are allowed to use a
graphic from the book.
If the book is less than
2,500 words you can
take two pages MAX from
the book.

Illustration and
Photos
Fair Use:

No more than 5
photos from the same
artist or
photographer.
When using a
collection of published
works, no more than
10% or 15 pieces,
whichever is less,
may be used.

Fair Use:
Teachers or students
may use these for
educational purposes.
All materials must be
bought or legally
acquired.
Must be used in face to
face education
environments.

work.
Up to 10% or 3 minutes, whichever is less.
Must be legally acquired.
Must be properly cited and credited to the

is less.
You can use
records, caster
tapes, CDs and
audio files of the
web.
