Big Idea that drives Lesson/Unit:


Students will be exploring the concept of identity to further understand themselves and to help them grow
as individuals. Moreover, the students will discover how identity is not only about understanding ones
self, but also is about understanding the people and situations around them.
Key concepts about Big Idea:
Understanding ones own identity can help them grow as an individual
Concealing ones identity causes one to take on another identity
Identity can be shaped and influenced by others
Fine Arts Goals Met by the Objectives:
25A Students who meet the standard understand the sensory elements, organizational principles, and
expressive qualities of the arts.

Discover shapes in a given artwork (e.g., circle, square, triangle).

Distinguish between rough and smooth textures.

Procedures:
DISCUSSION: (8 minutes)
o Schedule [Agenda of days events; first we will, next, then, last]
o Ask the initial essential questions for the unit giving time for responses
o State the key concepts for the unit, explaining concept and asking questions
Why are masks used?
What do masks hide?
What do masks show to others?
How can masks affect how we are around others?
o Introduce and Show Spider man, Comic book art
Describe how character and their mask relates with the lesson
How does the mask affect how you look at the character?
- What adjectives would you use to describe Spiderman?
- How would the way you look at him change if he didnt have a mask?
(Show Peter Parker)
- What does wearing a mask do for the person wearing it?
DEMONSTRATIONS: (4 minutes)
o Show more examples of different characters and their masks
o Show and pass out teacher example
DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (18 minutes)
o Place white butcher paper over tables
o Have students put on their smocks
o Place water cups, brushes, paints, and paper at each table
o Have students design and plan out their masks
o Students may then start painting, cutting, and constructing their masks
CLEAN UP: (7 minutes)
o All scrap paper is thrown away
o Put all materials away
o Clean up paint and wash brushes/water cups in the sink
o Take off and put away smocks
o Wipe and clean desks

CLOSURE: (3 minutes)
o Have the students reflect and think about what they would like to include for next class
by sharing with their ideas with their table
