Concept of Properties

Properties: Characteristic that help identify a

substance

Properties can be physical or chemical

When considering what TYPE of property is

described ask yourself: Did the identity of the
substance change?

Physical Properties
Properties measured or detected WITHOUT changing the
substance.

The melting point of water (turning from ice to liquid

water) is a physical property. It is still water, just in a
different state of matter.

Boiling point
State of matter at room temperature
Appearance

Chemical Properties
The ability for a substance to change into a new
substance.

The temperature at which paper burns is a

chemical property paper will catch fire at 451F
and becomes a new substance (smoke and ash)

Reactive or Nonreactive
Reacts with water
Reacts with oxygen

Change: the act of altering a substance

Changes can be physical or chemical

Evidence of a Chemical Reaction

A precipitate is a solid that forms when two

liquids react with each other.

The precipitate is a product of the chemical

reaction.
