Paraprofessional Lesson Plan Equivalent

Fractions
I.

Setting & Materials

*Setting
When: 10:50-11:20
Where: In the auditorium in the second floor hallway
Lesson Objective: Given a worksheet with 5 fractions, the students will
write 3 equivalent fractions to the given fraction with 80% accuracy.
*Things you will need
1. Learnzillo video
2. Projector/computer
3. Homework handouts
4. Extra Practice worksheets
5. Circle models
6. Square models
7. Equivalency chart paper
8. Whiteboards/ pens
II.

Lesson Opening (10:50-10:53)

-Call students to attention: Good morning Mathematicians!

-Go over behavior expectations (read out loud):
1. Follow directions
2. Raise your hand if you have an answer
3. Stay on topic during turn and talk
4. Be respectful of the speaker
-Announce learning target: Today we will be focusing on identifying
equivalent fractions, this is important to learn because it will get us
ready for the rest of our unit, which will be adding and subtracting
fractions. It may be tough but I know we can do it!
III.

Lesson Middle (10:53-11:15)

-Introduce video: We are going to watch a short video to introduce the

lesson for today, while the video is playing we need to make sure we
are paying full attention.
-Start video
-After video is over pull out first model (circle model)

Teacher Tasks
-Point to numbers when you say them: In the
video we saw that 1/4 is equivalent to 2/8 which
is also equivalent to 4/16. Do you see any
patterns in these fractions? Lets turn and talk
with our elbow partner for 30 seconds.
-Call on students who raise their hands, if no one
raises hands ask students by name ______, what
do you think? Is there a relationship between 1/4
and 2/8?

-If students state either that 1/4 is half 2/8, or

that 2/8 is double 1/4 answer with this: It does
seem like that, but actually 2/8 is equivalent to
1/4 lets take a look at our model again point to
circle model, we can see that they have the
same are filled in. But you are on to something,
1X2 is 2 and 4X2 is 8. Both the numerator and
the denominator are being multiplied by 2. That
looks like this draw equations on whiteboard,
1X2/4X2 = 2/8 and 2X2/8X2=4/16. But this
doesnt mean we are multiplying 1/4 by 2, we
are multiplying 1/4 by 2/2. This is very important
to notice, 2 is not the same as 2/2.
-If students state that 1X2 is 2 and 4X2 is 8,
answer with this: Yes you are right! Both the
numerator and the denominator are being
multiplied by 2. That looks like this draw
equations on whiteboard, 1X2/4X2 = 2/8 and
2X2/8X2=4/16. But this doesnt mean we are
multiplying 1/4 by 2, we are multiplying 1/4 by
2/2. This is very important to notice, 2 is not the
same as 2/2.
-We can make equivalent fractions by
multiplying the fraction we have by the same
number on the top and the bottom. When we do
this we are multiplying by 1.
-Show square model 1=1/1=2/2=3/3=4/4 and

so on. When we have 2 pieces out of 2, we have

one whole unit, the same when we have 3
pieces out of 3, we have one whole unit. When
the numerator is equal to the denominator we
have one.
-Write 2/5 on whiteboard. Now lets find an
equivalent fraction to 2/5, write yours on your
whiteboard.

Write equivalent
fractions on
whiteboards
Write equivalent
fractions on
whiteboards

-Very good, now lets find an equivalent fraction

to 6/9

-Pull out equivalency chart paper. Now let us

find equivalent fractions to 1/2. We are going to
take two minutes to come up with as many
equivalent fractions as we can to 1/2 and then
take turns writing different equivalent fractions
on the chart paper for 1/2. If someone writes the
one that you have, you can find another
equivalent fraction!

Two minutes of time

to come up with
multiple equivalent
fractions to 1/2.
Then go to board to
write answers on
chart when called
upon

-Give students two minutes and then begin to

call them up to write their on the chart paper

Work on homework,
when completed
work on extra
practice

-Hand out homework assignment: This is going

to be your homework for the evening. It gives
you 5 different fractions and your goal is to write
3 equivalent fractions for each given fraction. If
you want a challenge there is an extra practice
on the back. If you finish early please complete
the challenge.
IV.

Evaluation (11:15-11:20)
