Inquiry Proposal
A. I chose to expand upon my GAP paper. I plan on researching the lack of interest/ faith for
young adults and what may cause this change of faith.
B. It is important for me to write about this because I found myself questioning or not caring for
religion or putting the effort in to go to church and I wanted to see why I started to change.
1. What contributes to young adults losing interest/ faith in religion?
2. Does the absence of faith cause a person to act out?
3. Why do people question faith?
4. Do parents take offense when their children disagree with their opinions/ values?
5. Why is it so important for parents/ older people to see young adults put faith into
religion?
6. Does the lack of religion in school contribute to the decline of followers?
7. How do private schools verses public schools differ in the amount of kids who still
follow their religion?
8. What effect do teens have on other teens and their views of religion?
9. If a person loses faith in religion is it possible for them to regain it?
10. How does religion in schools affect peoples understanding of it verses only going to
church?
C. I think my readers are facing the same questions as me and I think that will motivate them to
read my paper. I find that as teens grow up and realize they can create their own values and
beliefs and they begin to question everything they have ever known. I think that my paper
will give those answers to their questions and make them make sense of their feelings. I also
plan to write for the parents and adults who get frustrated or dont understand why teens are
questioning their faiths more than ever before and I hope that my paper will also give them
light into how young adults feel and the pressure we feel now as we grow older.
D. I plan to look for my research in biblical journals, social media (seeing the way teens
worship celebrities, news articles, surveys on private school vs. public school, and
personal stories (people who have struggles openly with their faith).
E. I think my hardest challenge with this paper is going to be keeping my ideas focused on
topic. I find myself already going from the lack of religion in schools effect on the change in
faith to just what causes the change of faith (I am thinking more social impacts). I need to
figure out which one I can support and go from there. I also think for me, this is going to be
hard because I am going to see some answers and not just my own opinion on why I am
questioning myself and my beliefs. I may not like what I find and that kind of scares me.
