EDITOR'S NOTE

As the Middle East region is growing on all fronts, the future is gaining increasing importance. Majority of
Arab youth believe our best days are ahead of us according to the Arab Youth Survey conducted recently by
ASDAA Burson-Marsteller. The industry is increasingly shifting focus towards the future, through products and
practices, and Ducab is, as ever, leading by example.
2013 was a particularly successful year for Ducab as we increased our market presence with distinct momentum across multiple
geographies. Our customer base has grown significantly and this will serve as a catalyst to the expansion of our global operations.
As a leading name in the world of wire and cable solutions, it is a matter of immense satisfaction to witness an increase in the
loyalty graph, and above all, customer satisfaction.
Ducab is constantly improvising and innovating, alongside showcasing its product range, which will help us meet the tremendous
demand soon to hit the region, thanks to the Dubai Expo 2020 the largest event of its kind in the Middle East, and amongst the
best in the world. With a surge in the construction and infrastructure sectors leading to the Expo 2020 and impacting the wider
GCC region, Ducab is prepared to step-up its operations, with regards to, both, product range and geographical expansion.
Our recent acquisition of UK-based AEI Cables, one of the oldest cable manufacturers in the world, with 175 years of leadership
in the industry, is also a step in the right direction for our growth. AEI will serve as an excellent entry point for Ducab into Europe,
and its attributes will redefine our success, given the increased diversity rubber cables being a prime example it will add to
our overall product portfolio. In addition to this, Ducabs comprehensive market penetration and distribution network will make
for a smooth landing for specialist AEI products in the Middle East market.
Adopting a truly global approach beyond ambitious growth and expansion is crucial to Ducab as a brand. Sustainability is
the keyword here, and this can only be achieved by engaging in Smart strategies. At Ducab, we lay special emphasis on Smart
development, be it our techniques of manufacturing or management, and you can read about our experiences with Smart
concepts in this issue.
Lastly, you will find in these pages the many highlights of Ducabs immensely successful year, from our exhibits in Hong Kong,
Oman, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, to the commissioning and completion of several projects across the Middle East, as well
as a peek into what drives the Ducab team incessantly towards success in adopting the highest quality principles in their roles.
Before concluding, I must make a special mention of Dragons & Dungeons, yet another edition of the annual Ducab Dragons
challenge for our UAE Distribution network. The 2014 edition of our annual race for sales is better than ever before, as an allexpenses-paid trip to Europe awaits our best performers.
Exciting times lay ahead for Ducab, as can be seen from our newly unveiled corporate website and the following pages will give
you in insight on exactly how we will aim to succeed in going forward, as we always have.
Happy journey!

MANAGING DIRECTOR S MESSAGE

Ducab is growing, not just in terms of sales volumes or number of employees, but more importantly, in
terms of our ambitions and our goals.
Two years ago we started work on a new 5-year vision and strategy for the company. We set ourselves goals for profitability,
for growth and for expansion of product capability and geographical reach. During 2013, we started work on the projects
designed to deliver these goals and I am delighted to report that we have made progress in two major areas. In 2013 we
announced a major diversification with the creation of a new business Dubai Aluminium Company and just a few
weeks ago, we finalised the acquisition of AEI Cables Ltd of the UK.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to the 200 employees of AEI Cables, who now join their colleagues in the UAE as
members of the extended Ducab family. AEI is one of the oldest cable manufacturers in the world, and one that enjoys a
fine reputation in the European and global market. As Ducabs first-ever overseas acquisition, AEI Cables is an important
first step for Ducab as the company executes its growth strategy.
Although the European manufacturing base is important, this acquisition is really all about entering specific, specialitymarket sectors. AEIs strength in speciality cables, especially rubber and fire performance, brings immediate access to
offshore oil and gas, offshore marine, rail, defence and mining sectors. For Ducab, this is an opportunity to engage in
specialist sectors much more quickly than we could otherwise achieve.
AEI is a long established brand in a number of markets and has retained excellent goodwill from its partners and
customers. We intend to continue using the AEI brand name to build on this heritage. Ducab, which already produces a
complementary portfolio will benefit from AEIs more diverse range and speciality experience. AEI products, in their turn,
will benefit from Ducabs excellent distribution network in the Middle Eastern and African markets. More important in the
medium term is the opportunity for learning and knowledge sharing between the two organisations to build a stronger
global business. The immediate action plan is, of course, to realise the full potential of AEI by increasing the volume of
production. We have great confidence in the AEI workforce and, at the same time, have identified areas where Ducab's
experience and resources can help to improve, and we will be addressing these areas in the next few months.
An additional factor that this venture will benefit is the present market pattern, which is showing encouraging
developments with regards to demand for high-performance, high-safety products the strengths of, both, Ducab and
AEI. The market consumers are showing increasing inclination towards safety and, as a brand which emphasises on safety,
this provides us an extended platform to showcase our expertise in this sector.
Here, in the UAE, the announcement of Dubai Expo 2020 has given a boost to the local markets and we are looking
forward to seeing this cascade into our order books in 2014 and for the years to come. It is a terrific honour for the UAE to
host such a prestigious event and, as ever, Ducab will be looking to play its part in the success.

Ducabs first overseas acquisition AEI Cables

this acquisition gives Ducab a broader reach in the market, and the
opportunity to draw on years of AEIs experience in the industry.

Ducab is a brand of many strengths and

its diverse portfolio is one of its strongest
points. With an impressive range of
cabling solutions, ample production
facilities, and quality standards that are
the benchmarks in the business, Ducab
has been a tremendously successful
brand in the Middle East region. Given
its industry-benchmark manufacturing
process, efficient management systems
and focus on customer satisfaction, Ducab
has carved a niche for itself as a brand
in the Middle East and African markets.
Now, Ducab is all set to take this to a
global platform.
Ducabs acquisition of UK-based AEI Cables
serves exactly this purpose, while also
adding a lot more value to Ducabs lineage
and market presence. As a proven name
in the world of cabling solutions, this
acquisition stands to further strengthen
Ducabs positioning on the market grid
and, simultaneously, elevate the AEI

challenging opportunities.
AEI Cables, to introduce

family, is known as the worlds oldest cable

company. Founded in 1929, AEI (Associated
Electrical Industries) was at the forefront
of technology and innovation right
from the beginning, given the strategic
requirements of the United Kingdom in
the era. With every passing decade, the
dynamics of AEI changed progressively,
to a large extent and the many challenges
in its path added to AEIs experience,
which, in turn, paved the way for expertise.
Today, with 175 years of cabling expertise,
AEI Cables is not only one of the oldest
cable companies, but is also one with
possibly the highest collective experience
in the cabling industry. Over the years,
AEI has served a number of industrial
market sectors, including defence, shipbuilding, mining, rubber, rail (over and
underground), tunnels, air-field lighting,
shipping, and offshore an impressive list
of AEIs industry record through the years.
With a highly efficient production facility in
Birtley, County Durham, UK, AEI Cables has
lived up to its heritage while constantly
improvising on manufacturing techniques,
which gives it excellent credibility as a
brand. Like Ducab, AEI represents quality

impressive and this acquisition gives
Ducab a broader reach in the market, and
the opportunity to draw on years of AEIs
experience in the industry.
Having overcome challenging times in the
last decade or so, AEI garnered tremendous
goodwill from loyal clientele, and remains
one of the most preferred names in the
world of cabling solutions. In effect, AEIs
reputation will enable Ducab to increase
its market sectors and, above all, facilitate
an in-depth knowledge exchange, owing
to the trail of milestones surpassed by
both, AEI and Ducab.
Speaking on the importance of the
acquisition, Andrew Shaw, MD, Ducab,
said, Bringing AEI under the Ducab
umbrella is a step in the right direction
for us as a rapidly-growing brand.
Geographically speaking, this now gives
us a base in Europe a first for the brand.
Hereafter, Ducab will not be perceived

immense scope to our manufacturing
strategies as well. We now have access

brands to maximum potential.
What the acquisition primarily facilitates is
a focus on entering specific market sectors.
AEI is all about speciality cables, especially
rubber cables and fire performance
products, and this presents to us the
opportunity to adopt a very unique, very
diverse portfolio. In addition to this, what
AEI presents to us is immediate access to
offshore oil and gas, offshore marine, rail,
defense and mining sectors. In a sense, AEI
paves the way for Ducab to enter what have
so far existed as hard-to-supply market
sectors, something that is a very positive
development for us as a brand, as well as

our partners and suppliers. Ducab will focus

on AEIs continuation as a manufacturer of
cables for the industrial sector including
defence, construction, rail and oil and
gas, with particular emphasis on fire
performance products. This, however,
is what the immediate future holds, to
secure which, Ducab will prioritize the
realization of AEIs potential. Increasing
volumes is the obvious first-step, but an
overall improvement in efficiency and
performance is the larger target to benefit
most from the available opportunities.
To AEIs credit, it has a confidence -inspiring
workforce which is well-versed with the
industry and already applies a very efficient
production module. In the process of
the acquisition, Ducab has identified

areas in the machinery which

has scope for development,
scheduled to be conducted in the
coming months.
With the combined efforts of AEI
and Ducab, profitability stands to be
maximized even further and the revision
of current production modules will be
implemented in phases, beginning with
emphasis on the United Kingdom AEIs
home ground.
Overall, AEIs operations will support Ducabs
growing presence and popularity in the global
market. The acquisition will benefit either
brand equally, and will boost development
in every area, be it manufacturing, design
or distribution.

as a Sales Race to Europe, Dragons

reward program directed at Ducabs
sales teams and loyal dealers in the
electric retail market in the UAE.
Initiated in February 2014, Dragons & Dungeons is a 3-month sales
campaign that encourages teams to set pre-defined promotional targets
and deliver on them to win a week-long all-expenses paid trip to
Europe. Exclusive to electric traders/retailers through authorized Ducab
Distributors within the UAE, Dragons & Dungeons packs a lot of excitement,
never witnessed before.
The excitement, unsurprisingly, is contagious, as Ducabs sales and
marketing teams have conducted various road shows across the UAE,
in order to announce the campaign and create brand awareness,
simultaneously increasing Ducab Dragons visibility using appealing instore branding. The motivation to excel has even reached the Internet, by
the means of www.ducabdragons.com, which has been activated to assist
distributors and traders to meet their targets swiftly.
The all-round enthusiasm for Dragons & Dungeons is understandable,
given the success of the previous editions of Ducab Dragons activities.
After successful trips to India, Thailand, Hong Kong and Macau since 2011,
2014s lure of experiencing Prague and Dresden is a genuinely exciting
proposition. Following a medieval theme, the team will be ranked on
loyalty, bravery and team spirit, wherein the best performers will reach the
honoured rank of Knight of the Round Cable.
Without a doubt, then, Dragons & Dungeons 2014 marks yet another
exciting season for Ducab's distributors and retailers, filled with fun
challenges and fabulous rewards, where passion, persistence and fortitude
will determine who emerges the winner.

DUCAB LIFE

Ducab is home to youngest UAE NATIONAL ISO MEMBER

At a stage where
his peers were
barely settling
into their careers,
Mehran Al Awadhi

dared to think
beyond the
ordinary.
Aged 26, armed with talent, perseverance
and clear goals, Mehran, a UAE National,
cemented his quest to be a member of ISO
certification in the field of Asset Management.
Asset Management standards cover
several areas, largely including planning,
procurement, utilisation and disposal of
assets. Since the industry entirely depends
on assets, optimum utilization of the same

is of utmost importance. Delighted to be

the youngest-ever achiever in this field,
Mehran said In 2009, I had only just set
foot into Ducab and was part of a research
project to identify best management
practices. Around the same time, ISO was
introduced in the region and that sparked
interest in me. Soon after my application,
I got my approval (in January 2011) and
thereafter, it was a continuous test of
technical and analytical skills.
One of the biggest challenges was getting
the nod from the Emirates Authority for
Standardization & Metrology (ESMA).
The initial phase was perhaps the most
demanding but it was also a great learning
experience. As I see it, in the UAE market,
Asset Management is still in an elementary

stage, but its popularity is growing. Going

by the current trend, the UAE can reach
global Asset Management standards within
the next five years he added.
Concluding his outlook on the subject,
Mehran said ISO certification adds
immense value to a companys profile
and credibility.
For Ducab, this translates to efficiently
streamlined processes, further improved
standards and creating inter-dependence
among departments.
Lastly, I must thank the entire Ducab team
for being extremely supportive towards
my endeavours and I look forward to a
brighter future.

Ducab engineers win Kaizen Bronze

AT DUBAI QUALITY GROUP AWARDS
A team of Ducabs dynamic engineers
won the Kaizen Bronze award in the 2013
edition of the Dubai Quality Group awards.
With a presentation on Reduction in
Changeover Time in CCV Line in order to
increase efficiency and productivity, the
team, comprising of Wineyya Abdullah,
Bahaa Mourad and Sheikh Iddu, won the
award, garnering all-round appreciation
from the jury.

17

Thrilled to have
bagged an award
for their efforts,
Sheikh Iddu said
The CCV Line
is the heart of
production and
is a continuously
operational
platform. When we conducted Value
Stream Mapping (VSM) on the line,
we found many areas which had huge

room for improvement. Ultimately,

we decreased the set-up time to
9 hours as opposed to the previous
time of 12 hours which gives us the
ability to produce 7 more tonnes in the
time saved.
Wineyya Abdullah,
who
played
a
crucial role in the
presentation, said
Our efforts were
mainly directed
at standardizing
the procedures for
all operators with
the goal of reducing time favourably.
The best part is that this process is
extremely sustainable and having imparted
with meticulous training, we can look
forward to reducing the time even
further in the future, as the production
demand increases.

Echoing the teams

views was Bahaa
Mourad, who said
Using the 5S process
worked in our favour,
as it works at the
grassroot level
which is directly linked
to the CCV Line. We
collected data on the line and this served
as a fail-safe benchmarking procedure. The
challenge was in changing the culture more
than mechanical adaptation, and now that
the results are out for everyone to see, the
entire unit is more motivated. A 25% time
reduction is substantial by any standards,
and we can optimize this further with
time, in addition to adopting this process
to Ducabs other manufacturing units.
We'd like to thank Ducab for supporting us
through this elaborate exercise it really is
like a family and is very encouraging to be
part of such a dedicated team.

DUCAB LIFE

A day in the life of

THE PURCHASING DEPARTMENT
Within any company
the
purchasing
department plays a
vital role in maximizing
the business profits.
Ducabs
purchasing
department
does
that
and
more,
with smart practices, efficient dynamics
and an exuberant team. Ducabs
purchasing department is responsible
for all Ducabs purchasing activities not
just the tasks related to ordering raw
materials and dealing with vendors.
As a model unit, it minimizes costs of
purchased goods and services, screens
vendors for quality of product and
services and tracks orders from initiation
to reception.
To manage the entire procurement process
efficiently and effectively, the department
follows three primary steps, which are to

identify opportunities, manage internal

operations and to achieve objectives.
In terms of output, the department
prioritizes several factors to make the
purchase needed as beneficial as possible
to the company; some of these factors
come in the form of Pricing, Specifications,
Source credibility, Quantity, and Delivery
time. It also ensures concise allotment
of products to specific clients, while
foreseeing and preventing shortages and,
in conjunction, saving costs.
The Purchasing department has also
initiated the request to management
and formed the tendering committee, to
ensure effective decisions with regards to
the selection of suppliers and contractors,
and to define terms of tenders, review
of commercial and technical bids and
provide overall control, co-ordination
and supervision in the preparation and

conducting of tenders.
Challenges, however, as in any department
within a company are many, given
the scarcity of customers, increasing
competition from overseas and raw
material prices that continue to creep
upwards, executives are looking at ways
to reduce the cost base without reducing
quality and to retain or increase margins in
the face of falling demand.
Mohamed Al Ahmedi, Purchasing
Manager at Ducab, says Our role is to
ensure that resources are utilized in the
best way possible to maximize Ducabs
growth, business and profitability. We
work with dedication, while always
emphasizing on innovation, which leads
us to increased and sustainable profits,
the ability to challenge competition
and to provide more added values for
internal and external customers.

An insight into EMIRATISATION

Management, White Collar, which includes
fresh graduates and executives, and Blue
Collar, the employees on Entry level
positions. The percentage of Emiratisation in
the Management is 33% percent of the total
coworkers, 37% in White Collar employees
and 2% in the Blue Collar tier.

Emiratisation is a great module to absorb

the professional strength of UAE nationals.
The implementation of Emiratisation is
of immense benefit to, both, the industry
and the region, and can have long term or
short term effects of the overall wellbeing of
the UAE.
Ducab encourages skilled UAE Nationals,
while concentrating on the quality of its
recruits rather than the quantity. Working
closely in building relationships with local
universities and colleges, and offering fresh
graduates suitable jobs with focused training
is as important as creating the opportunity for
work itself.
The demographics of Emiratisation at Ducab
are categorized in the following order:
Management which includes nationals
on high level positions such as Senior

Ducab provides UAE nationals with in-house

and external training related to their field in
order to facilitate career growth as well as the
growth of the company. On-job training is
also a crucial factor, wherein the individuals
are assigned their own individual mentor to
guide them along their desired career path.
The nationals who complete two years with
Ducab and who have the potential of being
future leaders are imparted with leadership
courses that can assist with their growth and
readiness to lead within the organization.
For freshly graduated UAE Nationals,
Ducab has come up with training plans to
enhance their skills and knowledge. The
programmes practiced are the job rotation
programme, where the graduate is rotated
to all the departments relevant to his own
to understand the link between both the
departments as well as to get product
knowledge. The rotation plan involves 6 to
7 departments with each trainee spending

at least one month in each department,

practicing the duties and responsibilities of
that particular role.
The other part of training offered for Fresh
Graduates is the on job training which is
usually considered as level 2 of training. In
this part of training, the graduate works in
his original department with duties and
tasks like any other employee in the same
department. Finally, every experienced UAE
national in the organization has opportunity
of accredited training courses related to his
job such as ILM, CIPD, ICAEW, LEAN, IET & etc.
Ducabs success was a contribution of the
core strengths of an Emirati resources pool
from an emotional combination of loyalty,
attitude, fairness and deep understanding.
The next planned step of Emiratisation in
Ducab will be increasing the number of
UAE nationals in engineering and nonengineering positions, and structuring a
career growth plan for each of them within
their fields to ensure to have an effective and
more engaging work place environment.
Emiratisation has brought many attributes
to our multi-cultural workforce, such as
productivity, commitment to creativity,
operational excellence, cultural relevance
and thinking in strategic way.

DUCAB LIFE

EXPOnential growth
An in-depth Q&A with Colin McKay, General Manager Sales and Marketing, Ducab, on the magnificent Expo
2020 and Ducabs action plan gearing up for the event that will redefine Dubais economy.
Q. How important is it for Ducab to be part
of the Expo 2020?
Ducabs main market sector is construction
within the UAE, and as the Expo 2020 will be one
of the main drivers behind construction over the
coming years, it is therefore an essential platform
for us to play a part on.

recent years about the continued importation

of substandard products that do not comply
with the manufacturing standards required. We
are working with ESMA and Civil Defense to
ensure that all such cables are certified at the
point of production, by a third party, ensuring
compliance and public safety.

on third party certification, from international

approval companies, to verify its compliance
to the product quality standard. Whilst this is
expensive, and a practice not always followed
by our competition, it gives our customer the
confidence that when buying from Ducab,
quality is a given.

Q. The Expo 2020 will revolutionise the

UAE and Middle East market. How is Ducab
gearing up to match up to the challenge?
We anticipate a significant increase in demand
for our products during the build phase and we
have been taking measures to ensure that we
can maximize our capacity in order to meet this.
We also believe that there will be an increase in
demand for specialist cables that can continue
to operate during fire situations so that essential
circuits can function uninterrupted. This, in fact,
was one of the reasons behind our purchase of
the UK based cable maker AEI cables, which will
provide us with, both, additional capacity and
expertise in this product sector.

Q. How will the Expo 2020 participation

benefit Ducabs suppliers and business
partners?
The Expo 2020 will provide our customers
with greater sales opportunities and our own
increased demand for both raw materials and
services will do the same for our suppliers.

Q. What is Ducabs immediate plan of action

for the Expo 2020?
While we are yet to feel the demand effect
of 2020, we are actively working with our
distributors and suppliers to ensure the ready
availability of both stock of our products and
the raw materials needed to make them. We are
also investing in equipment which will allow us
to remove certain bottlenecks in production to
ensure that we can rapidly increase our output
when needed. We have also commissioned our
new rubber cable factory in Abu Dhabi which will
supply the robust cables necessary to survive the
onerous conditions found on construction sites;
previously these were all imported.

Q. In the run up to the Expo 2020, what new

technologies/practices will Ducab adopt to
position itself as a progressive name in the
world of cabling solutions?
I believe that the growing awareness of safety
within the UAE is driving demand for more
advanced cable types that either do not
produce large amounts of smoke or toxic fumes
in a fire situation or which actually continue to
function for up to two hours in an actual fire.
However, we have been very concerned in

Q. What kind of challenges does an event of

the Expo 2020s magnitude present? And
how will Ducab tackle these challenges?
The increased demand that we anticipate has
already been covered in my earlier responses.
However Ducab has a significant presence in
the oil and gas sector, as well as in overseas
markets, and we fully intend to maintain and
grow in these areas. We have created dedicated
sales teams and service cells to ensure that we
maintain our focus on these sectors during
the busy construction period that is bound to
preceed 2020.
Q. Given the high volume of production
involved in the Expo 2020, what measures
will be taken to ensure adherence to quality
standards?
Since its inception in 1979, Ducab has relied

Q. In what way is Ducab bringing something

different to the overall scheme of the
Expo 2020?
We are an Emirati company, and this is
something that we are very proud of. A
growing proportion of our employees
are Emirati, so we will be providing the
construction projects involved in Expo 2020
with a locally produced product that is
increasingly engineered by Emiratis working
to the highest international standards.

Ducab goes S.M.A.R.T

Development training is the way of the future, and

Ducab has always been at the forefront of it. Adding
to Ducabs winning streak are Khadija Al Hammadi
and Heba Al Hammadi, who won the Silver prize
in Best Practice for Managing Improvement
and Innovation for presenting the S.M.A.R.T
Development Training Program, at the ASQ & 5th
Continual Improvement & Innovation Symposium
2013, hosted by the Dubai Quality Group.

19

The prize-winning entry, S.M.A.R.T Development

Training Program, is an extensive training module
essential for new employees and increases the level
of employee satisfaction, skills and productivity.

Practiced at Ducab, the training program is

exceptional where the trainees become trainers at
a certain level. Ecstatic at garnering appreciation
for the presentation, Khadija Al Hammadi said
The idea of this training is to build professionals
and decision makers. The name SMART was
chosen because we believe our training program
is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and
Time bounded. The challenge was to be able to
deliver to the audience the idea of the project
in only 5 minutes and also, to have a balanced
timing for both of us. At Ducab, we learn how
to communicate and co-operate and this was
obvious when we presented together. The
challenges were rewarding since we've won the
silver prize in managing innovations category.
One of the core features of the S.M.A.R.T
program is the Trimming Rule, which is one
of the methods of TRIZ (Theory of Inventive
Problem Solving). The Trimming method is an
analytical tool for removing certain components
and redistributing their useful function and

follows three primary guidelines. Speaking on

the scope of Development Training, Hebba Al
Hammadi said Improving the competencies
allows an organization to remain adaptable
and competitive, which will help to increase
the productivity of employees. The training
program focuses in the core competencies that
each trainee requires in the career field, such
as fostering teamwork and communication,
managing change, analytical thinking, increasing
innovation, and self-confidence. Through all
this processes, the trainees have gained lot of
knowledge and experiences which will affect their
overall performance positively such as attendance,
improvement suggestions and task deliverables.
S.M.A.R.T also furthers Ducabs outlook towards
Emiratisation, given that UAE nationals always aim
to be well-qualified before getting into a specific
career field. In addition to this, Ducab recognizes
that a sustainable future is dependent upon the
successful development of a new generation of
Emirati professionals.
