After working with deaf and hard of hearing kids, I have had a feeling about working

with
them in some way when I get out of college. I would be able to do this if I became a speech and
language pathologist, which would be a dream job of mine. To reach my goal of becoming a
speech pathologist I would need to have a minimum of a masters degree, I would then need to
get a speech and language licensure, and I would then further my education by working for a
higher degree or apply for an internship.
It is required to have at least a masters degree in order to become a speech therapist. To
get a masters in this field, you need a minimum of 64 graduate credits and complete the
comprehensive written examination. You need to keep up a 3.0 GPA. You may not have more
than eight credits of a C plus or lower work accepted to achieve a degree. Required courses
obtaining a C plus or lower must be repeated and may only be repeated once. If a student
receives lower than a C plus in the second course, the student will be removed from the program.
As soon as I graduate with my masters degree, I will work on getting my speech and
language licensure. To get a licensure you need a masters degree with a major in speech and
language pathology. You also need to complete a supervised clinical practicum as well as
complete nine months of full-time professional experience. Then you need to complete the
Passage of the Educational Testing Service Praxis Series Examination, a course on HIV and
acquired immune deficiency syndrome, and a two-hour continuing education course relating to
the prevention of medical errors.
After getting my licensure, I would finish by working for my doctorate or apply for an
internship. I would apply for an internship because I feel like I should have some real-life
experience with my field. I would also need to see how well I worked with the students. If I were

to try and get my doctorate, it would better my chances of becoming a speech and language
pathologist.
Reaching your goal is like paddling out to catch a wave. Its hard work and if waves push
you under you come up and keep going until you reach your spot to ride the best wave. Its going
to be hard to become a speech therapist. I have to take the steps I need to reach it though and
having a job that makes me happy is what really matters to me. I just want to be able to wake up
and be happy to see the faces Im helping.
