Who did you shadow? (Add their credentials too)

For this experience, I chose to shadow Chris Farsjo, RN, BSN.
Role of this leader and where do they practice? (Be specific)
Chris is one of the charge nurses in the Emergency Department (ED) at Banner
University Medical Center. The role of charge nurse requires Chris to serve as a resource to any
nurses that need help throughout the 12-hour shift. As the charge nurse, Chris is responsible for
making patient assignments for each scheduled nurse at the beginning of the shift. If any nurses
call in for the shift, Chris has to either call someone in or use his judgment and clinical
knowledge to make necessary adjustments to the assignments. He is also the person that the
nurses go to when they have a patient conflict that they need help resolving, get too busy, or they
need advice or guidance with a patient assignment.
Discuss the benefit and value of this experience to you. (Be specific)
This experience was very beneficial to me. As an aspiring ED nurse, specifically on this
unit, this experience helped me gain invaluable insight. I now have an understanding of what
kind of resources I would have if I were to be hired as a new grad on this unit. I understand that
it is encouraged to call the charge nurse if I become overwhelmed, need advice or guidance, or if
my patients begin to deteriorate quickly or simultaneously. The charge nurse is rarely assigned
their own patients, so they have the time and willingness to help. I also learned that Banner has a
clinical pathway along with a projected timeline for new grads to become charge nurses. The

new grad starts in the general adult ED. Upon completion of associated certifications and one
year of experience, the nurse can then move to the pediatric ED. After an additional year of
experience, the nurse may then move to triage. After six months in triage, the nurse is eligible to
move to trauma. After one year of trauma experience, the nurse may then go on to work in the
radio room. It is at this point that the nurse may be considered for the role of charge nurse.
Would you recommend this specific shadowing experience in the future; why or why not?
(Describe why or why not)
I would recommend this specific shadowing experience to other students in the future.
Chris is a very knowledgeable and experienced RN. He has worked in the ED for almost 10
years now and also serves as a unit educator. Chris helped develop some aspects of the hospitals
computer system and teaches basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).
During the shadowing experience, Chris explained everything he was doing to me along with his
rationales. He took the time to make sure I understood his rationales and he answered all of my
questions. I truly enjoyed this experience.
