around room

1. Begin by reviewing from the previous day(s).


a. Review what nouns are
b. Have two or three students come up and demonstrate what
a noun is.
A noun is a: person (points to self), a place (points in arc at
room), or a thing (knocks on a table/shelf/desk).
c. Then play a review game
List of different words and have the students determine if its
a noun. If it is a noun they will say Yes Maam but if it is
not a noun they will say No way.
Be sure to correct and assist any misunderstandings
2. Move on to Common and Proper nouns
3. Define the two terms and have students write the meaning
in their journals.
a. Common noun - not specific, plain/regular nouns. Ex. dog,
school, boy
b. Proper noun - are specific, special nouns. Ex. Mark
(names), Wal-Mart, Purdue University
4. Create a chart on the Interactive whiteboard and ask
students to copy this T-chart in their journals. One column
should read Common, the other Proper.
5. Have students partner up and discuss a few other examples
of the two types of nouns.
a. Walk around the room and listen in case there is
misunderstanding
6. After they have spent a few minutes doing this move on to

the next activity.


7. Each student will be given a sticky note with a noun on it.
They must come and put it on the chart.
a. One at a time each student will come up to the board and
put the sticky note on the correct side of the T-chart on the
Interactive whiteboard.
b. The student must say their word, where they are placing it,
and why.
c. You will ask if the class agrees and if they do, they can call
on the next student to come do the same.
d. Have each child write the word down in the correct column
in their journal as they activity happens.
8. Now we will shift to another activity, but this is a group
activity.
9. Write an example on the board with proper nouns in it.
a. Circle the proper nouns and explain that they will do the
same with their groups.
10. Give each table a couple sentences to work on as a group.
Have them circle their answers with their highlighter.
a. Each group will come up and use the Interactive
whiteboard and circle their answers to show to the class.
b. Let the class see if they agree/disagree and encourage
class discussion.
11. Go on and play the game of Common Noun/Proper
Noun/Not a Noun.2
a. Place on the Interactive whiteboard but encourage class
participation by having them move to parts of the room
labeled with their answer choice.
This allows them to move around after a long time of
working hard and sitting.

Resources

Homework sheet:
Send home a worksheet where students are given a
common noun and to the right they must name a
proper noun that goes with the common noun. This
will be due the next morning and must be turned into
the correct basket in the morning.
