THREE IDIOTS SUMMARY

Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi want to reunite with their friend Ranchoddas Shamaldas
Chanchad. Farhan aborts his flight while on an Air Indian plane by stroke attack pretense while Raju
excuses himself from his wife leaving without pants. When they reached the Imperial College of
Engineering (ICE) where they studied, they see their classmate Chatur Ramalingam to remind his bet
with Rancho after 10 years and to show that he is now a successful businessman. Farhan and Raju,
together with Chatur, remembering their locate Rancho at his last known address.
Farhan, Raju and Rancho were three engineering students who share in a room of the hostel
in the school. Farhan studied engineering to fulfill his fathers desire rather than being a wildlife
photographer which is his passion. Raju studied to raise his familys fortune and get out from poverty.
Lastly, Rancho studied simply because of his love for machines and devices. He is different from
other students for he is not obsessed for exam ranks. With his different approach, he made a wrath of
the director of ICE Viru Sahastrabudhhe who the students called Virus like a computer virus.
Rancho believes that success in studying is not achieved by solely memorizing definitions
given by textbooks or professors, but by understanding and applying the concepts. He believes that
one should follow excellence, not success, as success will come itself if excellence is followed.
The three, once, came across a wedding then intruded for free meal. While here, Rancho met
a medical student Pia whom he warned about her price-obsessed banker fianc Suhas. Virus was
also there and was infuriated to the three not knowing that Pia is daughter of Virus. Rancho later fell
in love with Pia after the scooter event carrying Rajus father to the hospital.
When the ICE students took an exam, Rancho got the first rank but didnt mind it while Chatur
is frustrated he only got second rank, and Farhan and Raju got the two last ranks that made them feel
worse. Because of their ranks, Farhan and Raju got shamed by Virus in front of everyone. This event
created a tension when the three friends drunkenly broke into Virus house to confess his love for Pia
and then urinate on the door before escaping. Suddenly, Raju was seen by Virus so the next day, he
was going to be rusticated unless he will blame Rancho to be rusticated. Not wanting to betray his
friends or letting down his family, he committed suicide and then paralyzed. However, by intensive
medical care of Pia and determination of his friends and family to wake him up, Raju woke up from
comatose.
From those experiences, encourage by Rancho, Farhan broke his pretense by convincing his
parents to allow him to pursue his passion for wildlife photography. Meanwhile, Raju discarded his
fear for his future taking him to a straightforward approach in a corporate job interview. Both of them
got successful in their endeavors.
However, as the three was about to be expelled due to cheating, on heavy stormy night, Virus
pregnant elder daughter Mona goes into labor at the same time. Pia was still in self-imposed exile, so
she instructed Rancho to deliver the baby with the help of his power inverter that he had dreamed up
and Virus had mocked, and also a cobbled-together vacuum extractor. After the baby is apparently
stillborn, Rancho resuscitates it but by saying the phrase All is well the baby turned alive. Rancho
came first then Virus followed him and reconciled with Rancho and his friends. He was awarded
Virus' pen, which the professor had been keeping for decades before finding a brilliant enough

student to gift it to. He also allowed them to take their final exams and they graduate. After graduation
with an award of student of the year, Rancho disappeared and went into concealment.
After 10 years, Chatur comes back for his bet of who will be a successful between Rancho and
him. Having no contact with Rancho, Farhan and Raju starts a journey to find him five years ago.
They are joined by Chatur, now a wealthy and successful businessman, who is looking to seal a deal
with a famous scientist and prospective business associate named Phunsukh Wangdu. When they
find Ranchos house in Shimla, they find a completely different man the real person who named
Rancho.
As he told, their friend was an orphaned servant son of their gardener named Chhote whose
passion is learning while he, the real Rancho, didnt want studying. When they saw his intelligence,
their family agreed to let the boy study in place of Ranchos instead of laboring. In return, the real
Rancho would gain all his qualifications and after graduating, the boy would cease all contacts. Then,
the real Rancho reveals that Chhote is a schoolteacher in Ladakh. At the same time, Farhan and Raju
find Pia and take her from her wedding with the same price-obsessed banker.
Farhan, Raju, Pia and Chatur arrive at fake Ranchos school. Pia and fake Rancho rekindle
their love while Chatur mocks him for becoming a schoolteacher. He asks Rancho to sign a
Declaration of Defeat document and then takes the pen of excellence from fake Rancho given by
Virus. When his friends ask what his real name is, he reveals that he is actually Phunsukh Wangdu
and phones Chatur, who has turned his back, to turn around and meet his prospective business
partner. Chatur is horrified and falls to his knees, accepts his defeat and continues to plead his case
with Phunsukh to establish the business relationship he was after.
