- Incorporating what the patients want in

the pop clinic to the best of their
understanding but also what their
parents wanted and thought was best
for their child
- Taking vitals of a child was much
different than a mom or baby
-Providing the appropriate level of care
or support for first time or third time
mothers during labour
-Caring for the father supporting the

questions or addressing any concerns

During my shift in the POP clinic, I

used skills learned from my labs in
order to set up two IV bags, draw
up medications and give two
needles
The simulation in my lab explained
the physiological part of giving
birth and gave me a better
understanding of what the body
was going through
While two parents were at an
appointment for their newborn,
they had many concerns and
questions for the doctor. They also
had another child who was 3 years
old and wanted the attention of
his parents. I brought in various

distracting him in order to give his
parents time to focus on their
newborn
While I was on labour and
delivery, because there was only
one woman in labour at a time, I
was able to spend time
communicating with the mothers
and family in the room learning as
much as I could about them. This
allowed me to have a better
understanding of what they may
be experiencing and also any
unique needs that we could care
for
At a healthy baby checkup, two
parents were concerned about
their babies latch and whether
they were getting enough milk.
Thinking back to what I had
learned about breastfeeding, the
nurse and I taught them about
breast milk production and a
correct latch
One mother that I was caring for
had a baby in the NICU. The
mother wanted to visit her baby
as much as possible, so in the
morning I asked which times
would work best for me to take
her vitals for practice because our
usual 8AM, 4PM was not of
convenience for her.
I was able to sit in on a few
healthy baby checkups which
included vitals, babys weight and

principles of family nursing as relational practice.

in the application of psychomotor skills in practice
settings.

is consistent with a nurse entering a self-regulating
profession.

Select appropriate community support services for

families needing referral to enhance coping with
diverse transitional experiences.

questions about the first few days.

This allowed us to assess the
situation and baby, giving the
opportunity for any health
promoting teaching to be done
where parents may have concerns
- By spending time with patients
and their families, I learned about
their concerns, values and unique
needs
- After my experience giving my
first needle, I was much more
comfortable and able to give
another needle with more
confidence
- As I got more experiencing
checking vitals, the nurses were
able to gain trust in my
competence and accuracy
-I show up on time to every shift ready
and eager to learn
- I work accordingly with the
organizational protocol, providing my
best care and documenting it
appropriately
-lactation services were offered for
couple in POP clinic who expressed
issues with their latch following birth.
