Teacher Candidate: Rebecca Hampton
Name of Lesson: Past, Present, Future of Our Lives
Subject: Writing

Grade: K

Rationale for lesson: Students will be working on improving their writing skills along with
focusing on what they have learned over the past days about how we change.
Learning outcomes: Students will be able to write at least one sentence about each part of their
lives with appropriate spacing, punctuation and tense of words.
Assessment of student outcomes: Students will turn in their writing for assessment. I will be
focusing on whether they were able to understand how we change along with appropriate
punctuation.
Related Foundations/Indiana Academic Standard:
Common Core State Standards:
Writing 3: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or

provide a reaction to what happened.
Language 1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage
when writing and speaking.
Language 1a: Print many upper and lowercase letters.
Materials Needed:
Large Chart Paper
Writing Paper
Pencil
Weekly Reading Book: Farfallina and Marcel
Lesson/Activity Presentation:
Anticipatory set: Who can tell me what we discovered in our weekly reading book, Farfallina
and Marcel?
Lets think about activities we could do when we were young, now and want to do in the future.
In our minds, we need to think about our own experiences. What tense would I use if I was
talking about the past, present and future? Remember this when we create our writing!

(Students will need to be able to think about the differences of how they have grown. Also, the
students will be using drawing and sentences to create their thoughts)
Teaching procedures:
1. We will begin the lesson on giving ideas of what happened during the story and
comparing with how we have changed.
2. I will write ideas on the board for students to get their minds going. I will explain to them
that we need to think about what we can do now that we could not do when we were
young, and things we may not be able to do now that we can when we are older.
3. I will use the chart paper to give an example of what my story would look like.
a. Past: When I was young, I played with baby dolls.
b. Present: Today, I can drive a car.
c. Future: When I grow up, I want to be a teacher.
4. I will have students go back to their seats and begin their writing.
5. I will be walking around asking the students their ideas to make sure everyone is on the
right track.
6. Students will be given about 15 minutes to complete.
7. Students will then draw and color their ideas in the three blocks created for them.
8. Once students are completed, we will go back to the rug and share our thoughts.
9. We will review how we have changed just as Farfallina and Marcel.
10. I will collect the writings and look over for assessment.
Guided & independent practice: Students will be writing their own thoughts on their
personal piece of paper.
Closure: I will discuss with the students what they can do to make sure they are able to
do what they want in the future. I will show the importance of hard work and determination.
Students will be able to share their thoughts and comments. Students are now able to compare
and contrast what activities have changed and will change in the future.
Differentiated instruction:
Students who need extra assistance will be given help with writing words.
I may write a word they need help sounding out on a scrap piece of paper.
Higher level students may write additional sentences on the back on the paper.
On-Level and higher level students will work on creating the appropriate tense for the verb of
their choice.
Multicultural emphasis (if appropriate): I will include that many students are different and
that we all may not have been able to do something when we were young, currently and in the
future. It is important to show and teach the students that being different is okay. With this
comes, diversity in the classroom. Students will become aware of those differences around them.
Technology (if appropriate): N/A
Reflection on lesson:

I felt as though this lesson went very well in the sense of students mastering the skill which was
the objective. With that being said, in the future, I would focus more on having the students
really think about the tense of the verbs they used. I believe what really helped get the students
ideas going were one providing an example of my own along with having them share ideas
before writing them on their papers. As for having a classroom of my own, I would definitely
have to focus on the students who really struggled. I tried to make sure I worked my way around
the room however some of the students seemed to really focus with sounding out words. These
students were ones that I really never realized the level in writing. Obviously, for my own
classroom I would know which exact ones need extra assistance and need a differentiated lesson.
