Observation Task 4: Observing a teacher during a Science

Lesson
Objective
To observe Science teaching in action and begin to understand effective strategies
for Science teaching and learning in groups.

Procedure

You will need a copy of the Observation Table:

Before the Observation

Arrange to observe a lesson that focuses on Science and discuss the lesson
with the teacher beforehand so you can know the Objectives and the lesson
development.
Ask the teacher what strategies she will use to help her deliver the lesson.
Get an idea of the Inquiry/experiment the students will do.

Objective:
to be able to know how to explore
To be able to think like scientists

Strategies:

told the students a story about the lesson.

Inquiry/Experiment
The experiment about mixing colour teacher will mix two color
together to appear a new color.
Teacher will put water in different size to identify if water be change
or not.
Teacher will print her finger in the paper to see if all print finger
similar or not.

During the Observation

Complete the Table and make notes in the appropriate column on:

How the teacher introduces key terms and engages students

The topic and how its introduced
How much of the lesson is teacher talking time
How much group work is used and if students are active participants
What materials were used and their purpose
How much Arabic is used

After the Observation:

1. What was the objective of the lesson?

2. to be able to know how to explore

3. To be able to think like scientists
4. Was the objective achieved?
Yes
5. How were key terms introduced and explained?
The teacher use story to introduce the lesson then teacher provides the materials to do the
activities.
6. How did the teacher build the teaching/leaning? How did the lesson progress?
During activity time teacher walked around the class to observe students work then
teacher asked students any questions to make sure they understood the lesson.
Did teacher do whole-class teaching or group work? Why?
Teacher did both of them. Teacher gave each group the instruction to do the activities,
but when teacher used book she work with whole class.
7. Was there an inquiry/experiment? Describe the process.
Yes, the lesson was about how do the scientists work , she did three different activities
( mixing color fingerprint water ) all these experiment make students to explore and
explain and write what the results.
8. Did students record the experiment?
No
9. How much teaching was done in L1? Why do you think the teachers used L1?
Every time because the curriculum changed.
10. What was the purpose of these?
Identify how the scientists work, it help student to explore, investigate and write the results.
11. Were there any other resources/materials used to deliver the lesson?
Students book, video, marker, board

12. When did she work with the whole class? Why?
When she explained the lesson and when she gave them the instruction because they want all
class understand the lesson and activity.
13. How much of the lesson were the students using the book?
The Students used the book to write the result of experiments I think they used half of the
class.
Reflect on students learning Science in English and the teacher teaching in English.
I can't obverse the students learn science in English because the curriculum changed,
but I think when students learn science in English it helps them to understand the
English carefully because some words provide in both subjects and the student can link
between it and the English will be easy for them because they will focus to English. Also,
it helps the teacher to make sure all students understand.
