Established in 1965 on a former site of a church which has the capacity of 15000 people. It becomes a symbol of an independence and moderate Muslim country. The mosque went into major renovation in 1987.

Construction began in 1982 and finished 6 years later. It can hold about 24000 people and is the largest mosque in Malaysia.
