How to use the ruler to measure balloon diameter, how to use string to make linear
measurements between dots
o Students will start by blowing up their balloons to 10cm diameter and put 6 dots on the balloon
with the center dot being the home dot. They will then blow the balloon up 5cm more, then
measure the distance between the dots and home. This data will be recorded in the table
o Students will continue this process until they fill the data table up.

measurement, and then measure out the distance in floor tiles
o Pictures of the planets will be printed out, along with a measurement in floor tiles of how far
away the planets are
Students will have to match each planet with the measurement ant then arrange them in
the correct order
Each student will be assigned a planet

Phases of the moon exploratory lab sections 1 and 2 (25 min)
Teacher needs to rove in order to facilitate and clear misconceptions
o Start by modelling each step of the lab
o Students will be grouped in premade groups of 3 (7 groups a class)
o Activity 1: Students will begin the lab by writing their ideas about why the moon goes though
phases
o Activity 2: Lamp Placed in central location
Students will take polystyrene ball and put it on a stick- this will be the moon
They then are going to rotate around in a circle while holding the moon out at arms
length
Pictures will be drawn of each phase that the moon will go through from the perspective
of the ceiling.
The questions after the lab activity will then be answered

In this activity students will use the ball on a stick to model which direction the moon
revolves around the sun.
Use the lamp in a central location to create shadows on their moon on a stick. They will
fill out the tables after seeing the shadows on the ball
Use observations to answer the questions
o Activity 4: Hand out moon worksheet (Has 8 different circles on it with labels underneath them
around a central circle representing the earth)
Students will color in which part of the moon shows during that cycle of the moon
Complete a moon for each cycle (New, waxing crescent, 1st quarter, waxing
gibbous, full, waning gibbous, 3rd quarter, waning crescent)

Show students two different pictures: Near and Far side of the moon
Bring two volunteers to front of room. One person stands in the middle while
another is the moon
Have student rotate around the earth so that he/she always faces the earth
o (Does the moon rotate at all? yes 1 time per revolution around the earth
Have students act this out in their small groups in order to answer all of the
questions
o Activity 6: What causes Solar and Lunar Eclipses
Use the ball on a stick to create a solar eclipse
Students position ball to eclipse the light, then answer the questions
Use ball on stick to model the lunar eclipse

balls on a stick
Students will hold up the manila dots to try and create a total lunar eclipse and solar
eclipse by making shadows from the light
They will then use these models to answer the questions on the lab
The basic gist is to understand that these dont happen too often, because it is hard
to get the moon to line up perfectly with the sun and the earth
o End of lab questions- students will then answer the end of the lab questions in their groups
Students will get the chance to correct any portions of their lab that they got incorrect from previous
days for half credit back
