I learned Chapter 7

Beginnings and Beyond

For guidance to be successful a teacher must first understand a childs behavior. I

learned the core value of NAEYC is We have committed to ourselves to helping
children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that
are based on trust, respect, and positive regard. When we guild children in a
positive way, they learn and prosper. Positive guidance helps children control their
impulses, express their feelings, channel their frustrations and teach them how to
solve their problems. Positive guidance trains children to be respectful. I learned the
first step in establishing guidelines in it involves the child, the adult, and the
situation. Good guidance will help a child achieve self-discipline. I learned the five
factors that effective guidance are the environment, the individual, emotional and
social, development, and cultural. By anticipating a childs needs and growth
teachers set up classrooms that foster constructive and purposeful behavior.
Children learn when they have an environment where they feel safe. Each child
must be valued as part of the classroom or any situation they are in. When children
are told why there are limits, they cooperate more because they understand why. I
learned there are three types of temperament, the flexible, the feisty, and the
fearful. We learn about children from direct observations. When discipline is used as
a guiding strategy, children become more responsible for their actions, learn selfcontrol, and behave appropriately. I learned positive guidance encourages a childs
interactions. Children learn why they are involved. With positive guidance the child
finds a solution and they have a sense of commitment. I learned body and
communicating techniques when teaching guidance. The first is voice, always talk
to a child like you talk to anyone else. The second is word, always you the least
amount of words when guiding a childs behavior. The third is technique involves
body language, get down to a childs level when talking to them. The last technique
is attitude which is learned through experience. When providing guidance eye
contact is essential. I learned the teacher is the behavior model which is an
important step in guidance. Children will be calm when they see the teachers calm.
It is our responsibility to guide the children in a positive manner. Teachers need to
be consistent with their guidance, so children know exactly what is expected. When
guidance is effective children are active participants. When teachers are active
observers, they will learn to prevent misbehavior. I learned the ten effective
strategies for guidance. They are;
1) Ignore. When the behavior is not harmful the best way to deal with it is be
ignoring it and it will stop.
2) 2 Active listen and I messages. When we listen the child has the
opportunity to correct any misinterpretations.
3) Reinforcements. Childrens behavior is learned from experience and can be
changed through reinforcements.
4) Redirection and distractions. When we change the activity or distract the
child, the behavior changes.

5) Giving children choice. Choices foster self-reliance, self-direction, and selfdiscipline.

6) Set limits. When children have limits, they know what behavior is appropriate.
7) Active problem solving. This confronts childrens differences and works
towards a positive solution.
8) Natural and logical consequences. This helps children take responsibility for
themselves.
9) Tim Out. This allows a child to cool down when you remove them from a
tense situation.
10)
Physical Intervention. This will be done when we have to intervene so
no one is hurt.
Guidance helps children manage impulses, express feelings, channel frustrations,
solve problems and learn the differences between acceptable and unacceptable
behavior.
