Date:/ 10/29/2015

Subject/ Topic/ Theme: Grouping &

I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
The main focus of this lesson is for students to learn the grouping strategy
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan? (If applicable.)
This is the second of the four multiplication strategies with reviewing arrays
What are your objectives for this lesson? (As many as needed.) Indicate connections to
applicable national or state standards. If an objective applies to only certain students write the
name(s) of the student(s) to whom it applies.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 7 as the total
number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number
of objects can be expressed as 5 7.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in
situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and
equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent
these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the
reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
Students will be able to show comprehension of strategies using stickers and white boards.
Students will be able to model an array from a word problem using stickers.
II. Before you start
Prerequisite knowledge
and skills.
Assessment
(formative and
summative)

Students should be able to identify what grouping and arrays are from
previous lessons
Completion of both array sticker sheet and grouping sheet

The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher
activities and student activities
Tell students we will be diving deeper into the grouping strategy and then they will
have an opportunity to practice grouping and arrays in 2 different groups
They should be fond of the idea not sitting in their desks to practice problems but in
other areas of the room, with their friends

Pass out multiplication packets

Show Grouping poster Copied below
-Shows the number of groups and the number in each group
____ groups of ____
Open to Grouping Model page on ELMO
Directions: Represent each multiplication fact with a grouping model
-1) 4x7
Do this one and the next one together asking for volunteers to help
Students can do the next 2 on their own
Flip to next page
Read a Grouping Model
Directions: Write the multiplication fact that represents each grouping model
-1) 1 circle with 5 dots inside= 1 group of 5
Rapid fire the whole page with the class they should be able to do these quickly!
For the next activity the class will be split up into 2 groups. Melissa and I will each
have a group
-Group 1 will be a review of arrays with story problems. Students will have to create
an array for each story problem using stickers to represent their multiplication
equation
-Group 2 will be practicing grouping with story problems. Students will use white
boards and expo markers to figure out the multiplication equation from the story
problem. Once students figured out the multiplication equation, they will write it on
their answer sheet
students will have 10 minutes at each station then will switch to the other station

Once 10 minutes are up, students go back to their desks and compare their sticker
arrays with their elbow buddy. Facilitate questions such as:
Did you get the same looking array?
Closure
If the arrays do not look the same, are they the same answer? (2x5 will look
different from 5x2 in regards to up and down or side to side) commutative
property
