Saskatchewan Curriculum (2010)

All subjects in the Saskatchewan curriculum include First Nations and Metis
connections.
Below is an example from Grade 1 Arts Ed Outcome and Indicators:
Outcome CH1.2: Identify traditional arts expressions of First Nations and Mtis
artists.
Indicators:
a. Describe observations of traditional arts expressions of First Nations and Mtis artists
(e.g., observations from attending a community function, birch bark biting, powwow
songs and dances).
b. Sing songs of First Nations and Mtis cultural groups (e.g., sing a contemporary
round dance song taught by a community resource person).
c. Observe, describe, and perform grade-appropriate and culturally appropriate social
dances (e.g., round dance or rabbit dance).
d. Show an interest in knowing more about First Nations and Mtis artists and their work
(e.g., wonders, asks questions, selects books and pictures of First Nations arts
expressions, discovers that children with First Nation and European heritage are now
called Mtis).
e. Discuss stories, images, ideas, and/or emotions expressed in First Nations and Mtis
traditional arts
f. Recognize there are regional differences among First Nations arts expressions (e.g.,
West coast carving vs. Northern hair tufting).
g. Investigate characteristics of arts expressions of First Nations (e.g., West Coast
masks, beading traditions, Eastern or Northern birch bark biting).
h. Talk about the importance of the circle in First Nations communities (e.g., look for use
of circle at cultural events)
i. Explore and identify First Nation art forms that incorporate elements from nature (e.g.,
recognizes and represents patterns in nature).

Below are some Level 1 Core French Outcome and Indicators:


Outcome: 1.C.1: Identify elements of Francophone, First Nations, and Mtis
cultures with prompting. [S] [RP] (bold added for emphasis)
Indicators:
a. Recites a French comptine, sings a First Nations chant, Mtis or French song.
b. Employs French forms of address such as Monsieur, Madame appropriately to males
or females.
c. Locates cultural artifacts in the classroom, such as books, posters and flags.
d. Sings the Happy Birthday song as Bonne fte (for younger students), Bon
anniversaire, or Gens du pays (for older students).
e. Names lundi as the first day of the week on a French calendar.
f. Names traditional transportation common to First Nations and Mtis cultures,
such as la charrette de la Rivire Rouge (Red River Cart, le travois (horse or dog drawn
skis), le traineau (sled).
g. Names items of traditional First Nations, or Mtis winter clothing such as
lanorak (hooded waterproof parka), latiqik (goose down parka), une cape de bison
(bison cape).
h. Participates in Francophone or First Nations and Mtis cultural activities, such
as games, singing, rhymes, and chants.
