1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
In nursing school, they only offer students a chance to experience a NICU Level two, but in reality, there are more
job opportunities in a Level three, which is the critical care unit.
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
(educational level and requirements)
I have an Associates Degree in Nursing, and I am a certified Registered Nurse.
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
As a NICU Nurse, I have to make assessments three times a day, per patient, which includes checking their breath
sounds, feeding them three times a day, changes their diapers. Every other day we bathe and weigh the patients.
4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
(job security)
Since I graduated in July, I do not have much experience right now. Security in the health field is great, and
increases with more experience. I would like to become a NICU flight nurse in the future.
5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
(salary)
In the morning I come in at 6:45 and leave work at 7:15 for three days a week.
6. What potential for growth is there in your field?
(growth potential)
The health field has a lot of potential for growth, especially for those who have a higher educational level. The
nursing field is great because you can choose different paths that could fit for you.

Revised Fall 2013

***Questions 7-10 will be created by the ISM student.

7. Why did you choose this area of nursing?
Whenever I went to nursing school, I always found myself coming back to the NICU and the adult wings.
Whenever I started searching for a job in the Houston area, there were more opportunities for the NICU than all
other sectors of Nursing. I also felt that I could really make a difference not only on the patient but on the whole
family.
8. What education is required to be hired for your job?
My job requires an Associates degree, and I received my education from the College of the Mainland.
9. Does your hospital provide funds for your clothing, continuing education, and retirement?
Clear Lake Regional Hospital doesnt pay for our scrubs, but they do pay for continuing education, provides
401K, offers discounts on many non-health/job related items, and many more benefits.
10. If you could go back in time, and change your career path, would you?
Defiantly not. When I was in 5th grade, I decided to become a nurse because I saw how nurses really impact
families and patients when my brother was admitted into the hospital. I would like to think that I am doing the
same thing now.
