AERODYNAMICS

General Aerodynamics Principle

Drag
Energy that slow down
a moving car
1)Frontal pressure
2)Rear vacuum

Lift(or Downforce)
Force the car down
onto the track

Drag coefficient
Measure cars

aerodynamics

Frontal area
Influence to the drag
force

Aerodynamics devices
Wings
-generate
downforce

Spoilers
-barriers to air flow
-creates high
pressure
-pushes down rear
of car

NACA Duct
-drawn air into an
area
-make thin
boundary layer

Aerodynamic design tips

Minimize frontal area
Drag coefficient can be reduced, top speed and
acceleration will much better
Use spoilers
Produce downforce by creating high pressure in the area
above the trunk
Use wings
Inverted version of aircraft. Work very efficient, generates
more downforce.

Use front air dams

At the front of the car. Restrict air flow reaching the
underside of the car. Creates low pressure.
Rake the chassis
Slightly lower to the ground in the front than in the rear.
Lower the nose reduces the volume of air pass under
the car, higher the tail creates vacuum which lower the
air pressure
Cover exposed wishbones
Usually made from circular steel. However, it creates
turbulence. Much better to use oval instead circular.
