Group Size: Whole Allotted Time 40 min

Coop. Initials
Grade Level 3rd Grade

Subject or Topic: Science: Pollution Unit

Section

STANDARD:
4.5.3.C: Identify different types of pollution and their sources.

I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):

The 3rd grade students will be able to identify a solution for water pollution by
creating an informative poster.
II. Instructional Materials
SMARTboard
Guided notes
Markers (enough for class)
Poster board (1 per group 5)
Venn Diagram displayed on board
Water Pollution PowerPoint
2 pictures of the Ocean. (clean) (polluted)
III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of
additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills
1. Students will be familiar with what pollution is.
2. Students will know how to complete a Venn Diagram.
3. Students will know how to compare and contrast to items.
Key Vocabulary
Water Pollution- means anything to add water which
makes water dirty and unsafe not only for drinking and other human
uses such as swimming, irrigation, and industrial use but it also
makes water harmful for other creatures on the Earth such as marines,
animals and plants.

Oil Rigs- a structure with equipment for drilling and servicing an oil
well.
Pollutants- a substance that makes something (as air or water) impure
and often unsafe.
Dissolved- to become part of a liquid.
Dispersed- to cause to separate and move in different directions;
scatter.
Sewage- waste material (such as human urine and feces) that is carried
away from homes and other buildings in a system of pipes.
Oil Spill-where oil is released into the ocean or coastal waters.
Diseases-an illness that affects a person, animal, or plant : a condition
that prevents the body or mind from working normally.

B. Big Idea
The students will understand the causes and effects of water pollution
on the environment.
C. New Content
The students will learn about the specifics of water pollution such as:
what causes water pollution and what effects water as on the
environment.
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. On the SMARTboard there will be two pictures of oceans. {see
attached}
2. On the chalk board there will be a compare and contrast Venn Diagram.
The teacher will tell the students to observe the pictures. If needed the
teacher can call each table up for a closer view.
3. The teacher will call on students to explain what is different in both
picture and what is the same in both pictures.

B. Development
1. The teacher will present the power point. {see attached}
2. The teacher will hand out the guided notes sheet {see attached}
3. The students will fill out the guided notes as the PowerPoint is being
presented.
4. The teacher will go over each slide explaining the details and making
sure the students are copying down the right information onto their guided
notes sheet.
5. After the students are done the notes there will be an activity that is
included at the end of the PowerPoint. The activity shows a picture of a
ocean and in the picture there are many examples of effects and causes of
air pollution.

6. The teacher will have five of these pictures printed out for each table.
The teacher will tell the students to circle at least three things that are
wrong with the picture and write them down in detail in their science
notebooks.
7. The teacher will then wait until the groups are done working and have
the picture up on the SMARTboard. Each group will come up and circle
one of the concerns in the picture, and then explain to the class why it is a
concern to us and the environment.
8. The teacher will make sure that each group has an opportunity to come
up and circle something on the picture. The teacher will encourage the
students to write all the things being discussed into their science
workbooks.
9. The last slide on the PowerPoint is a spot for the students to come up
with solutions to Water Pollution. The students will do a Think-Pair-Share
with their group about their solutions for water pollution.
10. Each group will receive one poster board and markers and will make
an informative poster about how to prevent water pollution.
C. Closure
1. The teacher will collect the poster and hang them around the room. She
will also grade these based on rubric.
2. The teacher will tell the students that tomorrow we will be talking more
about water pollution and getting our hands dirty!
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
For Greg: He will be sat in the front of the room so he can be
redirected when he begins to get of task. Also make sure that he is
partnered with his peer tutor to assist him during tasks.
Effective grouping: Group struggling students with confident students.
Provide outline of the video for students.
E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative: Science notebook will be checked at end of the week for
completion of guided notes.
2. Performance Assessment: Teacher will collect the poster and grade them
according to rubric.
2. Summative: Test will be given at the end of the unit.

V. Reflective Response

A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (Reflection on

student performance written after lesson is taught, includes remediation for
students who fail to meet acceptable level of achievement)
Remediation Plan
B. Personal Reflection (Questions written before lesson is taught. Reflective
answers to question recorded after lesson is taught)
1. Were the students engaged?
2. Were the students able to grasp the content of the causes and effects of
water pollution?
3. Were the students able to come up with solutions to water pollution for
their poster?
VI. Resources (in APA format)
