LESSON PLAN OUTLINE

Early Childhood & Elementary Education Program

Kelly Crawford
Kindergarten
November 10, 12:00-12:25
TITLE OF ACTIVITY Froggy Bakes a Cake Sequencing!
CONTEXT OF ACTIVITY
Read-alouds are an essential part of a young childrens education. They
are introduced to new vocabulary, taught to recognize words, and learn
about phonemic awareness. After the students listen to the book, they
will be responsible for retelling the story from beginning to middle to
end. The class has some introductory activities with sequencing and
identifying beginning, middle, and end so this will be an activity to help
reinforce that knowledge. They will be challenged as they havent ever
had to put a book back in order, but the goal is reachable as they have
listened to many stories and had to identify beginning, middle, and
end.
CONCEPTS/SKILLS

Froggy Bakes a Cake by Jonathan London

Copier
6 Pieces of printer paper to print 6 pictures from the book
PROCEDURE
Preparation of the learning environment
I will make sure that there is no furniture in the way so that the
students are able to stand in a line on the carpet after the read aloud.
The book, Froggy Bakes a Cake, and the copied laminated sheets will
be placed up at the front of the classroom near the carpet so they are
in easy reach when it is time for the read-aloud.
Plan for taking turns during the activity
The children will be sharing their pages with a partner.
Introduction of the activity to children

As the children enter the room for recess instruct them to get a
drink of water, use the restroom, etc. and find a seat on the
carpet for the read aloud.
Today we are going to read a book that I was read when I was in
kindergarten, just like you!

I want you to pay special attention to what happens in the story

because afterwards we are going to have to put the story back in
order!
I have another challenge for you, do you think you can handle
it? Okay, good! Whenever you see a sight word, put your finger
on your nose! Thumbs up if you understand!

Implementation of the activity

Read the title and author.

Read the book Froggy Bakes a Cake.
o When reading, put emphasis on the sight words and look at
the students to see who is touching their nose. If students
arent touching their nose, ask them if they see a sight
word.
After reading, ask the students to get into their partner groups
and get ready to put the story back in order.
Introduce the activity to the kids. Each partner group will get
one page. You have to work with your partner to figure out where
your page goes. The whole class is going to stand up with their
pages to make a line.
The activity should be demonstrated with two pages, the teacher
should pick a partner and choose another pair of students to
stand up with a page to demonstrate how to work with their
partners and the rest of the class to put the story back together.
Hand out the pages to the students and instruct them to get
started.
The students should be watched as they begin working to put the
story back in order, if students seem to be standing in the wrong
positions one of the adults can ask them if they think that is
correct.
After the students are all in order, the teacher, or non-paired
student with even numbers, should flip through the pages over
the book again to check to see if they are all in order.

Closure and cleanup

Wow! You all did a fantastic job! Have a seat on your squares
and get ready for the next activity! I will collect all of the pages
and the book and put them aside.

PLANS FOR DIFFERENTATION

All of the students will be able to participate in the activity and

understand the reading as intended.
WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU
DO ABOUT IT?

The kids could have a hard time remembering the way that the
book went. Before they get frustrated, I would step in and help
the students with the activity.
The copies could turn out bad and the students couldnt see what
was going on in the pictures, I would write a short description on
the back and explain what they were as I handed out the pages.

SUPPLEMENTAL PLANS FOR PARTNER TEAMS

Help assist the students in getting in order

Split up copying and laminating the pages
