Journal Entries:
9-7-15- Before I met with my mentor on Tuesday, September 9th, I prepared a written
piece discussing fall fashion. On Tuesday, I was at my mentor's workplace from 2:30 to
4:30. During this time I discussed what I wanted to earn out of this mentorship
experience. Since my mentor is the owner of the Bay Area Media group who is a proud
publisher of the Bay Area Houston Magazine, Gulf Coast Mariner, and Best Practices I
really wanted to learn what work must go into to publish a magazine and also
marketing techniques that are used to promote the magazine. Since I love to write I
was given the chance to be able to have my own article published in Bay Area
Magazine's October issue in which I must write about fashion as well as take
pictures/find pictures of some of the outfits I talk about in my article. My mentor and I
discussed an agenda for my semester long mentorship. First I would be observing
activities in the office setting and taking notes, answering phone calls regarding
advertisements in the magazine, becomming aware of the sales process, writing a
fashion column and photography, I'll be able to meet the editor of the magazine, learn
how to process graphics, and last but not least learn some tips on marketing. After my
meeting with my mentor, Sunday afternoon I worked on finding and taking pictures for
my magazine article and sent them to the graphics designer. I worked from 1:30 to
3:30 on this activity.

9-14-15- Tuesday, September 15th I met with my mentor from 2:30 to 4:30. We
discussed ideas for my fashion article which will come out in October. I was able to
observe the process of adding an add into the magazine and got to try it out too. I also
was assigned my first interview assignment in which I'm going to go to a local
restaurant on Tuesday and interview the owner/manager about their popular food
items and what made them want to get into the business. Once I got my answers I will
be able to create my own food review which will be published. Thursday, September
17th from 5:30 to 7:30 I worked on my writing skills and made an appointment with the
restaurant for the interview.

9-21-15- Tuesday, September 22nd, I went to Amici Italian Restaurant from 2:00-4:00. I
conducted a food interview asking the manager questions about their popular dishes,
freshness of their food, drink selection, inspiration, and philosophy of their restaurant.
I will be using my answers to write a food review which will hopefully be publlished in
the next issue of Bay Area Houston Magazine. Thursday, September 24th, I worked on
writing my food review. I started writing the rough draft for it which will be due and

edited by Pulitzer Prize Winner. I also looked for pictures online and proofed my
fashion article which will be published in the October Magazine. I worked from 5:157:15

9-28-15- Tuesday, September 29th I started working on typing my food review. The
answers I got from my interview with the Chef/Owner of Amici Italian Restaurant
enabled me to construct an article with accurate information. I worked from 3:30 to
5:30 at home on my laptop. Thursday, October 1st, I started the slides for my outline
for my midterm project. I researched some makreting techniques as well as tips to
compose a good, flowing article. I also gained some tips from the editor as well which I
will include. I spent some time finishing up my purpose paper too. I created a rough
draft and then revised it and posted it on my weebly as well as printed it out. I worked
at home on Thursday from 2:30 to 4:30. I was not able to visit my mentor this week
due to a Dr.'s appointment and test but I plan to make it up next week.

10-5-15- Monday, October 5th I started working on my final presentation. I worked on

it from 3:00 to 4:00. I put together my slides and layout pf the presentation. I also
added more info from my computer onto my weebly. Tuesday, October 6th I went to
my mentor's. I worked from 1:40 to 3:40. I gained more information to put on my ISM
Midterm Powerpoint. I learned about the new projects and articles I will be writing. I
am planning on putting together another food review, a paragraph on "Yachty Gras"
which I will be editing and revising and also an article on Disney World which will give
me more insight into creating a travel blog and article. Wednesday, October 7th I
finished up my midterm presentation. I added my citations and more clipart images to
make it more appealing to the viewer. I worked from 3:30 to 5:30 and submitted my
project as well.
10-12-15- Monday, October 12th, I went to my mentor's from 3:00 to 4:30. During my
time there I observed activities within each specific job. I learned a little more about
marketing techniques as well as graphics. I learned that you must obtain a stock image
if you want to publish a photo in your magazine article. It also can make your article
more unique to you and what youre discussing to your audience if you take your own
photos and use them throughout. I made up some of my hours from missing this last
week during this day. Tuesday, October 13th I worked at my mentor's from 3:00 to
5:00. I was able to get my mentor evaluation form filled out and I also edited my food
review on Amici. I was able to talk and meet the editor and Pulitzer Prize Winner, Mary
Elise, who edited and gave me ideas for my article and future articles. I discussed what

my next steps would be which would consist of me getting images of Amici restaurant,
food, and the owner. Thursday, October 15th, I worked on my weebly from 5:30 to
7:30. I made sure everything was posted.
10-19-15- On Monday, October 19th, I worked at home on my hypotheses for my
survey. I researched the statistics on how often people read magazines and how the
latest technological advancements have made some magazines start to go out of style
and only be published via the internet. I worked from 6:00 to 7:00. Tuesday, October
20th, I did some activity hours from 3:00 to 4:00. I completed my survey questions and
started an account for survey monkey which I am thinking about using as a method to
conduct my survey. Wednesday, October 21st I completed my two portions of research
that were due this past Friday. I worked at home from 4:00 to 5:00. However, I was
unable to meet with my mentor this week due to my ACT tutoring, I do plan on making
up my hours this next week for the week of October 26th, 2015.
10-26-15- Tuesday, October 27th, I worked for 3 hours at my mentor's office. I
interviewed my mentor for my interview assignment from 2:00 to 4:00. I also setup an
appointment with my two other interviewees. I am planning on interviewing the editor
and Pulitzer Prize winner this next week through phone and I will interview the graphic
artist Brandon in person on Tuesday. Wednesday, I worked from 5:00 to 8:00. I added
more slides onto my powerpoint for my final presentation. I added my survey results
onto my powerpoint which will show some statistics and I am planning on adding my
research in it as well. Thursday, October 29th, I was at my mentor's from 2:00 to 4:00. I
was assigned a new topic to write about which will be a travel article on places I have
visited. I made up my mentor hours for missing last week and a few weeks ago during
this time.
11-02-15- Monday, November 2nd, I worked on my invitations to give out to my mentor
and 2 evaluators. I worked for 2 hours, from 3:30 to 5:30. Wednesday, November 4th,
I finalized my invites so that they would be ready on for Friday's evaluation with
Mrs.Click. Thursday, November 5th, I set up my final presentation date, time, and
location with my mentor. It will be at my Dad's dental office at 3:00 and should last
approximately 20-40 minutes depending on setting everything up with the
presentation board. Also, my food review was published in this month's issue so I
reviewed my article and listed some pros and cons on what I could improve and what I
should keep doing. I was at my mentor's from 2:30 to 4:30.
