responses I will start the read aloud of the selection of the book
titled So you want to go to sea? and Why do you want to
explore?. These section explain why Columbus and the other
explorers wanted to make the journeys they did. Also while I am
reading aloud to the student I will have them practice there active
reading techniques of highlighting and marginal notes. After I have
read the selection the whole class will do a quick brain storming
activity and reading response activity.
Brain Storming
1. Using chart paper I will first write the word why? and ask
the students why they think people wanted to go on these
journeys of discovery.
2. Possible response that I expect are spices, for a short cut to
west Asia, perfumes, silk, fame/fortune, country glory, and

Reading Response Activity
1. After the read aloud tell the students we are now going to do
a fun activity.
2. Tell the students Now that you why Columbus was making
his journey I want you to use your paragraph writing skills to
write a letter to him from the view of someone who wants to
join him on his journey. Grab a partner, there will be two
groups of three. When you write your letter tell him why you
want to explore by ship based on the text. Make sure you
include your topic sentence, supporting detail sentences, and
example sentence and a conclusion.
3. Give each student a clean sheet of paper to write on.
4. If they have any questions feel free to answer them. Try to
make this a quick write activity at about ten minutes during
their centers.
5. Once students are finished collect the letters for later review.
