Topic: Letters Uu-Zz
Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.A Print many upper- and lowercase letters.
Objective: SWBAT independently draw the letters accurately on the paper 6 out of 7 times.
Goal: Students will gain the knowledge of how to write the letters u, v, w, x, y, and z in upper
and lower case to help them write words in the future.
Materials Needed: Letter dice (Uu-Zz), paper, pencil, white board and marker
Prior Knowledge: Some of them know how to write these letters because it is in their name. The
have seen them before in the classroom. Students know they are alphabet letters.
Gain Attention: We are going to learn how to draw the letters u, v, w, x, y, and z.
Modeling: I will introduce the letter by name and draw it in front of them explaining how to
draw the letter.
Guided Practice: I want everyone to follow me, so we can make the letters together. We will do
one set at a time. I will show them how to draw it on the board, and then I will have them
draw it with me in the air with their fingers. They will trace the letters on the highlighted
letters on the paper.
Check for Understanding: The students will get into a group of two. The children will roll the
letter dice. They will write the letters they roll on to their paper. They are trying to see
which letter gets 7 spots first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth. Each letter rolled is
written in the spots. Once a letter has 7 spots, they continue to keep rolling for the other
letters have 7 spots filled.
Lesson Closure: I will tell them the letters we went over and have them write the letters with
me.
Assessment: I will use the dice worksheet to see how well they have written their letters.
Differential Instruction: For the lower groups, I will have half of the columns with the letters
written in highlighter for the children to trace over, so they have an easier time making
them.
Reflection:
I did not do my best. I could have taught the children how to write their letters better. I was
rushed on time and was trying to power through the letters even more so, when the children said
they already know how to write them. I was short on time, because directions had to be given for
the iPads since it was their first time using it. I just got through the letters, and didnt actually
play the game.
Theoretically I would have known if my objective was meet, by playing the game. The children
would have to identify the letter and draw it on the paper.
Going over how to write the letters was great. The children were getting it and drawing them on
the white boards with me. About half the children had their mind blown when I explained that
a W is two Vs connected together. It was a great experience for the children. I engaged all but
two children for the entire time. Next time I would have better instruction to writing the letters.
