This magazine article is relevant to my topic because this is where it starts to diverse. Meaning, it
brings up a good point in my research. Yes, theres the obvious discrimination against people
with mental health problems but theres also discrimination within yourself. If youre a person
with mental health issues, youre going to beat yourself up so many times. Its going to feel like
its your fault...this is where this article begins to explain how peoples brain work. It starts by
explaining what type of people it affects the most, and continues with what kind of factors can be
the reason for the way that youre thinking. What I like about this article is that its based on the
opinion of the general, not the opinion of a certain author and their views on the issue. Its stated
that the overall population of people with a mental disability agree with this because its the right
thing to do. This article is going to help because of its more broad understanding of
discrimination against people with a mental disability. It not only mentions the obvious but the
hidden questions that are there within that same subject.

EMPO-excellence in life sciences. (2011). Mental illness, stigma, & discrimination -Wulf
Rossler. [Youtube]. Available from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpDLcq3zAdY

This video is relevant because the researcher speaking is being interviewed and giving facts
about stigma, how people are prejudice, colors of peoples skin, the way they go about a certain
situation, etc. This video, for the most part, explains my research in a nut shell, the speaker, Wulf
Rossler, is giving the facts about how people perceive stigma and exactly why people are the
way they are. He channels a level of curiosity because of the fact that he asks questions that the
general person cannot think of. As he mentioned in the video we all ask why, but we shouldnt
be throwing that word around loosely. Which is basically stating that asking why people are the
way the are, is a better question than asking a mentally ill person whats wrong with them. This
article will help because its more of an overview of my topic. It targets every section that covers
discrimination against mentally ill people and gives me a sort of outline on the facts that I have
to give in order to make my point come across.

Meyer, I. H. (2003). Prejudice, social stress, and mental health in lesbian, gay, and bisexual
populations: Conceptual issues and research evidence. Psychological bulletin,
129(5),

674-697.

This article is relevant because it not only focuses on mental health, but it also targets what kind
of people suffer the most with it and how theyre discriminated against it. For example, the
article goes on to say how the stress is so unbearable for them that they dont even see means of
living anymore. It goes step by step on a stress level, beginning with minority stress and going
down to a minority person as a victim. It describes the different symptoms and outcomes of eat
stress level. Theres a paragraph that only mentions limits and challenges, how people who are
homosexual and suffer from a mental disorder can only take so much. They experience identity
issues because of the discrimination and hate. This actually could worsen the illness, according
to the article, it worsens the working cells in your brain to initially become fried and make
your case even worse. Thus, not giving you the chance to prove other people wrong. This article
is going to help because of the fact that it mentions how discrimination physically and mentally
affects others and the people themselves, how the stress, sometimes, is too much to tolerate.

Mossakowski, K. N. (2003). Coping with perceived discrimination: Does ethnic identity protect
mental health?. Journal of health and social behavior, Vol. 44. No. 3, 318-327.

This article is relevant because it will bring up the question of Does it matter what ethnicity I
am if Im mentally disabled? This article is raising that question because what if people of a
different race get a better treatment than those who are not that particular race or ethnicity? Some
people dont only discriminate against people with a mental disability but they discriminate
against people with a disability and the ethnicity that they are. Its pretty much a slap in the face
and what this article is stating are ways to cope with that and how to overcome it, if necessary.
The journal article also emphasizes the reactions of these situations. Not only that, it gives
information of personal stories about how certain people went through the same thing and how
they became independent and fought, they fought even when they thought that they couldnt.
This article will help because it will give me the information of past stories. Ill have somewhere
to reference what Im speaking about. Itll help by providing me with examples of mental health
discrimination.

Noh, S., Kaspar, V., & Wickrama, K. A. S. (2007). Overt and subtle racial discrimination and
mental health: Preliminary findings for korean immigrants. American journal
of public

health, 97(7), 1269-1274.

This journal article is relevant because it will enhance the meaning of discrimination and show
just exactly how bad it has gotten against people with a mental health issue. This article is more
of a trial-type of article. Meaning, this has data from surveys that were taken, not only that, it
contains actual numbers that form a better ground of statistics for the amount of people who
suffer through discrimination because of their mental state. Its reliable because of its
measurements and how theyre going about this but in a scientific matter. Instead of beating
around the bush and fighting for rights, they are trying to prove that just because someone has a
mental health issue does not mean that they are incompetent of learning. In some cases, people
are lead to believe that they are completely normal because they dont even know that they have
a mental illness. This article helps to scientifically show how these people are dealing with this
and what the outcomes of these results may be. This article will help because with the more
statistical data that I collect, it only makes me research that much more credible. It can help
prove that case and point that Im trying to make.

Ricci, M. (2009). Living with a mental health condition. National alliance on mental illness.
Retrieved from
https://www.nami.org/Find-Support/Living-with-a-Mental-Health-Condition

This NAMI website is relevant to my topic because it begins the idea of what its like to live a
life while having a mental illness and how to overcome that challenge. The website continues to
describe different ways to overcome those people who wont give them jobs based on what their
condition is. It states that people with a mental illness or disability should not be rejected due to
that fact. People from all over the world trust this website because this website provides ways to
help people. Not only people with a mental disability but also the people that are around them,
how they can cope or how they can be able to help and put stop to the discrimination from other
people. The NAMI website varies because they have certain tabs for the general being, teens
battling a mental disorder, or just straight information. Not only that but they also offer find
support to those who are not completely satisfied with the website. You not only get online
information but you also get information on where to physically go and get some help. This
website will help because I see it as a starting point. How are you going to start a topic without
having a way to actually start it? I see this website as an introduction to the whole topic of
discrimination against people with a mental health issue.

Time to change. (2012). The stand up kid. [Youtube]. Available from

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE5Ip60_HJk

This video is relevant because I found it the best example I could find. It shows and speaks about
how people deal with discrimination because of their mental health issue. It continues to show
how people are quick to laugh and judge but they dont know what its like to be dealing with
that kind of treatment. This video enhances the fact that you never know who could be going
through it, it could be the brightest kid in the class. This video shows perfectly how one is
laughed at and humiliated before they even get a chance to explain or prove themselves, its
unfair. This article will help because it will not only give people a more visual idea of
discrimination against mentally ill people but it will also influence them to not be so quick to
laugh and point fingers. It proves that you never know anyone until youve walked a mile in their
shoes.
