LESSON PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

Students will identify characteristics of a Veteran
Students will use collaboration during the group discussions.
Students will use listening skills while instructions are given.

MATERIALS:
Book
Markers

Large post-it note (chart paper) for teacher

19 students on the carpet

ANTICIPATORY SET:
Engage students in a discussion about why they think we are having a Veterans
Program
Have students describe what they think Veterans Day means to them.

LESSON INTRODUCTION:
The teacher will:
Prepare a chart paper prior to discussion.
Encourage students that their answers were correct and elaborate more details to link
all answers together.
Tell them that we are going to build out knowledge to expand on the songs we are
singing for our Veterans Day program

TEACHER INSTRUCTION:
The teacher will:
Encourage a reminder to students what an adjective is by having whole group sing our
adjective song.
Revert to words that described the pumpkin during our Pumpkin Investigation
Discuss the basic rules of working as a partner during turn and talk

APPLICATION/GUIDED PRACTICE/INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:

As a whole group, students will share adjectives that describe what a Veteran is to
them. (Teacher will write the responses in one color.)

Teacher will read story to students; while reading teacher will pick certain parts to
have a turn and talk throughout the reading. The select pages will be done prior to
lesson.
Once story is completed, teacher will write different adjectives that the students come
up with in a different color used earlier in order to visually show students the comparison
of prior knowledge to what was learned.

CLOSURE:
Make connections with students by asking the following questions:
Do you know anyone who is serving in the military or who has served in the past?
Why do we call it serving in the military?
Review the vocabulary of words (adjectives) that were described before the story.
Have 4 students share a take away they are going to share with someone about our
Veterans Day lesson.

EVALUATION
I will use formative assessment to evaluate the adjectives that are described prior to
the story by choosing students from a random selector and I will also use formative
assessment the other students I did not call on with the random selector to describe new
information after the story. I will informally evaluate them while they are collaborating
wit peers during turn and talk throughout the story being read.
